MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
.....and it's the NIN version 😡
*launches pre-emptive nuke strike*
I'm not familiar with the song but my husband is not impressed and is actually looking quite distressed.
John Hurt? On telly? Blimey.
Sacrilege!!!
Who? What?
Thank god it'll all be over soon.
I feel a little sick and distressed myself.............just wrong, wrong, wrong
it'll all get better in time.
Sorry. IGMC
FFS.
Didn't all the bed wetters get upset when she did Snow Patrol? Same when someone else did Hallelujah? And the fella that did that one last year?
I don't really mind who covers what. Fair play to 'em for picking something different.
cah
one of my favs ruined
had to put JC on the laptop to make it all betterer.
who tf chose that for er on prime time tele , D'ya think she even knows what its about?
* realises this is an X Factor thread *
I'm boycotting the show since they got rid of Janet
X factor final elf.
Johnny Cash was absolutely appropriate but Leona Lewis .....FFS
Am not watching it on the TV but I've just found it on you tube... Could be a damn site worse, at least she can actually sing. She has also done Iris it would seem (Not had a chance to listen to that one though)
That's better......
she has a lovely voice lol
Also at least she appears to actually have some real influences!!!
Assuming it's not another spin off of Cowel's drivel machine
Jesus. You lot sound like you actually own music. Get a grip.
OK , So we can have Sue Bo doing the Prodigy 'Smack my Bitch up '..
S'Ok tho , she has a nice voice
aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Iris is ruined by the unnecessary instruments too.
Back to the now show for me.
I'm seriously bothered, I'm about to explode in an apoplexy of tirade and rage against the man that is killing music.
oh no, hang on, no I'm not. Tulisa is fit.
Why people watch if is not enjoy? 😕
one of my favs ruined
I use to think like that when I was a teenager.
You mention the Johnny Cash version. When NIN first came out with that, can you imagine their cry baby fans if they knew that an old C&W singer would make a more commercially successful go of it?
It's like listening to students.
Some middle aged producer currently experiencing a mid life crisis obviously thought it would be ace. She either has no say or has no idea what suits.
The new nose didnt hold her back. Vanity and culture pillage ahoy
singletrackmind - MemberOK , So we can have Sue Bo doing the Prodigy 'Smack my Bitch up '..
Oh hell yes. Christmas number one.
Ok
But even NIN acknowledge the JC version is a better adaptation of their song .
Dont think they will be saying the same thing about LL.
I just attempted to listen to Iris , made it to the chorus , sorry not for me .
As JC knew he was on the way out i dont think making a commercial success of it was in the forefront of his mind , maybe leaving a lasting impression on people perhaps
American Werewolf In London is on in my front room
"hi David"
"go away. you#re undead"
I'm just disappointed so many stw people are watching that guff
I didn't know Johnny Cash had done a cover I'm just listening too it now, it's pretty awesome.
I've always assumed that the NIN version was the original!! Am I wrong?
OK , So we can have Sue Bo doing the Prodigy 'Smack my Bitch up '..
I would physically walk into a shop and buy that subo cd with my arms and real proper money.
YES. Dr. NIN did the orig , JC covered it 3 or 4 years later IIRC
I really liked the arrangement of the song, but her voice grates somewhat.
sc-xc - this might explain to you why myself and others are a little less than enthusiastic. Music is not always about commercial gain.
But even NIN acknowledge the JC version is a better adaptation of their song
NIN is Trent Reznor.
Nope Dr NIN did the orig , JC covered it 3 or 4 years later IIRC
wrong again..
try 15 years later.
Its a song about Heroin addiction. I love the fact Leona is so open.
FFS,
Not a fan of Keith Lemon then?
Had to play the Cash version to the bread knife after I went mental at her watching this crap.
tbh I thought the Cash version was his originally, thanks for posting that NIN version.
I hate Xfactor, but with wives and daughters in-house, I get aurally raped every week (spend the time online so only hear it)
Hence the SMACKmy bitch up Sue Bo comment .
Music is about music.
I saw NIN back in the old days, and also JC. I used to be one of those pretentious musos who only liked stuff before it got 'out there'. I am perfectly aware of how some people think, I am just glad I don't have to think like that anymore.
FWIW, I love The Downward Spiral, Love American IV and don't particularly like the kind of music they play on X-Factor. But I'm not gonna think any less of the songs I do like just because a pop star has the temerity to cover a song that I don't agree with.
As this thread has proved, some people will watch Leona Lewis and go hunt out different versions of the song....and that's supposed to be a bad thing? Look at when one of them did Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley and Leonard Cohen were in the top 40!

This version ain't. Bad either!!
Can people not just ignore puerile comments?
It's quite easy
Iris? I thought you all meant this to start with:
Now that would be a brave cover version for LL.
I get aurally raped every week
carefull Derek, the language brigade are out in full force tonight. Must be the full moon.
The Breeders debut album is fantastic
sc-xc has a point.
I actively hate X-Factor. the sheer thought of what it is and what it means for the poor guys who go on the show brings out in a right rage!!!
However, I had no idea about the JC version of Hurt before this thread. Now I am listening to the JC catalog on You Tube.
Have a listen to Live at Folsum Dr Dom. Brilliant.
I can't get on with the speed of the songs :/
But that is true of most country music I've listened too. Love his voice though.
EDIT: Just re-listening too Leona's version of hurt, it is definately the instrumental aspect of it which ruins the song. The Piano at the start is about right, but the rest of it is too fluffy around the edges.
I know what you mean. I started off with the American Recordings albums (V and IV are my favourites, VI is a cash in)...then drifted into Folsum. It's one of those that's worth sticking on the ipod, lying on the bed and listening to as you drift off 😀
Out of all the songs on the American albums, If you could read my mind I find the most haunting - his voice cracks up half way...
"Haunting"
That's pretty much how I describe most of the music which really moves me.

And an eclipse tonight (only partial down here) saw it out riding, should have stayed out longer..
If you could read my mind, the original, was on an album called the singer and the song I used to listen to with my dad when he was taking me to my Monday evening athletics training every week.
That whole album I think has basically defined the music I like.
I have never been able to find a CD version - we had a tape version
There you go then....X-Factor result!
AAAARGH top news story on google:
"Former X Factor winner Leona Lewis gave a stunning performance on tonight's Final, singing a cover of Johnny Cash's moving hit Hurt. ..."
Thought it was doing pretty well til all the excess instruments came in. Proper dischordant NIN piano and all- was hoping for the sonic death ending from the Further Down version...
Just like her version of Run really, her part is good, and then it's drowned in unneccesary crap.
Yup
But these session musicians need to be employed somehow!!!
Perhaps the drummer could be employed sweeping streets or something.
Same on her cover of colourblind as well
Ah, I hadn't heard that one... <youtubes>. Hmm. Actually not a bad stab at all is it? Losing all the wee faltering timechanges in the piano makes it so lifeless though. Is it even real piano? Sounds like it was played by a robot.
OTOH she is less whiny than Adam Duritz.
The only good thing to have come out of the Z factor if RATM getting an xmas number 1
I prefer 'Bleeding Love.' Wasn't that song about rape and murder? Appparently Leona loves reading about serial killers, she can't get enough of them.

That needs to happen again, would be nice if the Wurzels could do it this year 😀
Funny how no-one's done Kerosene on X Factor yet...
Andy
(Set me on FIY-UH!)
It isn't a bad place where I grew up, but there was nothing going on but the cornfields. My life experience came from watching movies, watching TV and reading books and looking at magazines

Angsty middle class white boys song covered by working class people results in STW middleclass "I'm down with the grungy edgy music" outcry?

Who exactly are 'they' ? Just wondering like.- TurnerGuy? 😆

Isn't she another product of the Brit School? (googles...) Yep, and the Silvia Young theatre school, and the Italia Conti Academy. So pretty much exactly the same as the jarrow march 🙂
But yes people are being a bit precious - Trent will make more money either way, I don't like the cover but its hardly the end of the world.
thisisnotaspoon - MemberHaha, no, but perfect comic timing, just downloaded this
Man, Karen O properly ruined their version of Immigrant Song didn't she. Should have got Leona Lewis to sing it.
It's a terrible version but at least Leona looks good.
It could be Will Young singing 'light my fire'. Now there's something to get annoyed about.
