I’m looking to replace my berlingo multispace 2hdi and the Volvo V40 1.9 diesel seems to offer a lot of car for around a grand plus reasonable road tax and mpg.

Does anyone have any experience of them, good or bad, any known trouble areas, and would anyone know what they are like to do basic servicing on and work on should the need arise?

I had a '98 1.8l Petrol. It was pretty much bomproof. Gave it no love, just oil changes, and it just soldiered on. Killed a coilpack (but that won't be an issue on a diesel!) and they also have an appetite for snapping rear springs.

My dad has had an 02 2.0 Petrol from about 10k to well over 140k and it just soldiers on. Again, had snapped springs, also had a couple of rear wheel bearings go. But other than that, just service items really.

A mate had an 02 plate diesel. Again, pretty solid, however, the clutch/DMF went when it hit higher mileage (kind of to be expected) and then the turbo went. TBH, you'd get that with most diesel cars on higher mileages.

Good cars though, decent size, comfy, but uninspiring in most ways. They get the job done though. I ran mine for a year and a half, lost £150 when I can to sell it, a mate ran it for a year and a half, lost another £150. I think that's pretty good VFM!
