Done all the search engines, compared everything. personal experiences of above please, or anything for that price which you think is a better bet.
Particulary like the 6.5 frames per sec mode.
Thanks STWM
Got any money invested in canon gear already? If not then nikon seem to have the upper hand over canon at the moment.
In the canon range you wont find much thats a better bet at that price range, I'd love to have the cash for a 40D, I've got a 20D. However it depends on your intended use though, and personal taste, thats why there are no definitive answers. The 40D is now out of production and, as far as I can tell, not available to buy anywhere now, the 50D and soon 60D will replace it, but it doesnt make it any less of a camera.
Jambo - interested to hear how nikon have the upper hand?
Lenses already so got to be Canon really.
I have the previous 30D and its been really good apart from the usual canon Error 99 message occasionally and having to do the old switch off switch on routine.
Used it for semi pro stuff and it does the Job nicely. If i wass going to be using it fully pro i'd go full frame mind.
I have a Canon 40D, stepped up from a relatively plasticy 400D.
No problems whatsoever. Quality build, good features. Cannot go wrong really with this Canon range.

I have owned a 40D since they were introduced and it has performed perfectly every time.It produces very good quality images. The spec is very high which allows you to be as creative as you want.I believe the main think is you need good quality glass to go with this body.
Currys were selling off their 40Ds pretty cheap last week. Might be worth a look.
Good camera but not sure that I'd pick it for the frame rate, especially for MTB pics. I'm not sure you'd notice the difference in frame rate between that and 3 or 4. I never use continuous when taking shots of biking, I can't get the feeling of motion or speed. For other sports though it can be useful.
Rockdodger's point is also a good one though. You should also look at better investing in better glass rather than a new body.
What body are you using at the moment?
I've got a 40D, my second dslr - I made the change from Olympus E500 to the 40D.
Much better camera in terms of build quality and ease of use through a good menu.
Super camera for the money, can't think of why I would want to upgrade to a better body really. Handles any Canon fit lens , the better lens will reward you. Just go and buy one.
Have a look over on www.talkphotography.co.uk
A camera version of here: Geeks with cameras as opose to Geeks with Bikes.
More capable than me, rugged and good in the hand (ahem, the camera)...
I moved up from a 20D and haven't seen much benefit other than ISO display. I shoot mostly RAW so the custom settings don't really get used on the mode dial, but I imagine they could be handy.
Personally, I wouldn't spend more than £600 pr so on a body until I can go full frame - we can argue FX vs DX all you want, but I much prefer the bigger view finder on the full frame, plus images defintely appear to get noisier at higher ISO with 12+ on a cropped sensor.
It's plenty sharp enough for me, plus I tend to prefer softer images anyway as not many people look good on portraits with out a bit of softening post shot!
At the price, the competing Nikons are smaller in the hand (too small for me) and a bit plastic feeling. The D300 is nice, but much more expensive. There's not much to mark the 40D down, really.
Had one for 18 months and only sold it as I needed the
money. Really nice camera and the 6.5fps is great for catching crashes and getting one good shot from a short burst.
Only real downside to the 40d was the rear LCD. It is soft, if you zoom in to 100% then you can't really tell if an image is sharp or not.
If I had the money I'd buy another one tomorrow.
It's a great camera buy one.
Just looked at the currys site. Cited as a best deal is £669 for EOS 500D+18-55 lens kit. Daylight robbery. No 40Ds showing.

probably the best deals will be on here
Have you looked on...
I'd pimp the wife & get a 1D Mk3.
And a handful of L's to go with it.
