Last week I renewed my contact with o2. I had a very good 4g signal before renewing.
The day after, 4g was gone. Had numerous online chats with o2, new sim card, phone software is upto date. All settings on the phone are ok, correct bolts on etc...
Any ideas what could cause the 4g to stop working?

New contract should have 14 day cooling off period.

My issue is a total lack of any 4G signal anywhere near where I live.

Sounds like a network issue in your area. Contract renewal just coincidental - the sales people have zero influence on the network people.
