It will eat some, but probably only a negligable amount. Push email doesn't use a lot, neither does notifications from apps.

It really depends on the app. For example if you had a GPS app running in the background that was constantly downloading new maps for your location on you were driving around lots, you might use lots of data but that's probably a fairly extreme example.

It's rarely an issue

It won't use any data unless your phone requests/sends some.

Like I said, I'm sure it'll be fine. Just check the amount of data being used (almost every phone has this somewhere in the settings) so you can track it for a few days if you're concerned.

I turned it all off on mine more to see if the battery lasted any longer rather than for data but I found it use only slightly more data with it all on and the battery seemed just as good if not better

you should be able to download an application that monitors your usage and can alert you if you are use for example 50% of your monthly quota. Depending on the application it may also have settings for disabling internet connectivity once you reach your monthly quota to prevent you being charged any extra.
but i have been using my smartphone for about 3 or 4 months now and have never got anywhere near my monthly quota, and that is only 500mb. then again i tend to be close to wifi at home/ work so i only use internet for gps applications and occassionally checking emails.

You'll be fine unless you get vast numbers of mails with big attachments. Watch out for wi-fi or gps as they kill the battery
