We will be in touch
We have recently bought a USB hub as we ran out of USB sockets on the computer.
MrsMC assures me that when she installed it everything she plugged in through the new hub worked - mouse, keyboard, printer etc etc...
I found that I couldn't access the external hard drive through the hub when I needed to, and on checking everything again, seems nothing is now working through the USB hub, but it will work when plugged directly into the PC. As it worked when MrsMC installed it, the fact that nothing works now is clearly MY fault.
(To confuse me further, the light on the external hard drive comes on when plugged in to the hub, suggesting some connection is being made by the computer, but the computer cannot see it when you search for any external drives)
Is the hub stuffed, is it me being dumb, or is this accursed Windows 8 PC going to be the death of me....?
Thanks for any tips, just off to make tea, back in a while....
One question - are you powering the USB hub from the PC or via external power ?
I suspect the former, and that the hard drive is not getting enough power run properly ( assuming that everything is plugged in properly, no obviously damaged cables ).
Yeah, powered by the PC - I can maybe see that there isn't enough power to run the hard drive, but even the mouse and keyboard don't work through the USB hub either?
no by powered he means an external power supply. Or at least a second usb plug that plugs into a 2nd port to boost the power from 500mA (one USB) to 1A.
You need to power the USB hub at the mains if you want devices to get enough power like HDD's, it might be fine for mice keyboards etc, but not stuff that needs more juice. Remember the hub is splitting the power of just one measley USB port from your computer to how ever many devices are plugged into it
C'mon guys, we'll have none of this consensus nonsense on STW....
Thanks for pointing it out for me
You could get one of these instead,
These are fed power buy the motherboard and act like normal USB sockets.
