There was a DJ recently who resigned who had his studio in some remote corner of Scotland.. the bloke had been at the Beeb, on the radio, for something like 50 years..

The late Desmond Carrington

Desmond's home and studio was just up the road from Dunning in Perthshire, he was a bit of a local legend when I lived there

I mean, who would want to move to Salford willingly ?

It's quite nice actually, I often wander past Craig Charles or the boy lard playing their tunes on the way back from the gym or booths.

Anyway maybe with the free time he can help me find Werner

but find her a bit Too Cool for School for my liking.

How very dare she have been presenting radio shows since the early 90โ€™s, playing the best indie rock and pop, before anyone else had even heard of most of those artists, and retain her enthusiasm for it. Such people should never be allowed near a radio studio, they might play something interesting!

Yep, been a fan of Kenโ€™s deceptively sharp wit for 20 years. A national treasure.

Another KB fan here. I can understand why it might be a bit 'old school' Radio 2 for many, though.

Steve Wright can bugger off though. I have no idea how he keeps that slot.

Desmond Carrington! Yeah, thatโ€™s the guy.

You can tell what time I get up sometimes to head out to work 🤣

Salford Iโ€™m sure, somewhere in there, is a decent enough place. But moving your whole family to a County where no-one understands the language or accent, is frankly outrageous (innit) 😜

The studios over the road from Somerset House (Aldwich) are still owned by the Beeb.. itโ€™s where the World Service is broadcast from.. sure thereโ€™s space in that mahoosive building?

Anyway, Jo definitely suits early evening... only slightly miffed that the early evening Jazz/Country shows are being pushed back to post 9pm now..

Oh well..

I recently listened to Simon Mayo being interviewed about his new book and having sold the film rights to it etc. He came across really well, really animated and he's quite an interesting bloke. His radio show however is dreadful, clearly he's just been treading water for the last couple of years there. Actually after listening to the interview I said to my wife I wonder how long he'll keep on doing the radio show, doesn't sound like he needs it or enjoys it. Not long it turns out. Good luck to him.

I also do think putting Jo with him was to shoehorn him out. Shame she had to be the one, she's a good DJ.

Which sounds in complete contrast to Wittertainment which he sounds genuinely happy to be doing, though I've never heard a drive show come naturally.

I also have to say he is the only DJ from radio who I've won something from, 2 tickets to Baz's R&J which due to Diana funeral didn't get through in time and 3 CD's from one of his pick 3 records things in about 97!!

LTL I think, a lot of this probably depends on when you grew up, I realised when Lamo did his & Jo's 205 years on the BBC that they had covered from the point I discovered music and had my own room - I think they were the ones who told me this grunge bloke killed himself back in 94.

I'll have to give it a listen, it'll be interesting to hear the difference.

as long as they don't bin "the organist entertains" at 7pm on Friday evenings - just when you're driving home getting ready and wound up for the weekend...... oh. 1920's music is it...

I seem to be the only person in the world who still enjoys listen to Steve Wright.

I'm also a Ken Bruce fan and I quite enjoy Jo Wiley.

Simon Mayo going is a big loss and having to endure Zoe Ball in the morning:ย god help us.

Years ago, KB had a chap on Popmaster and while they were doing the usual pre-quiz chat, Ken asked the chap what he got up to in his spare time - "I run the "We Hate Steve Wright Club"". There was a glorious moment of silence, before Ken coughed and got straight into the quiz without any further comment.

Noone has yet mentioned the best show on R2 yet - Johnny Walker's Sounds of the 70s. This happens to be my favourite decade for music and Walker has (quite literally) been there and done pretty much everything, so his commentary tends to be both witty and acerbically informed.

That went to an 11pm midweek slot sometime ago

Desmond Carrington (aka MC Desmo) sued to do the 7pm friday slot and it was always interesting, his breadth of music was fabulous. Tony Blackburn does the Golden Hour in that slit now and although different it's still a great show. he then does sounds of the 60s at 6am on satruday. Glad that moved, didn;t like the previous chap.

Ken Bruce is ace

RadMac to move from 6 music for the drive time slot? Chance would be a fine thing...

I can fully understand why too. Doing a very good job for eight years with a listenership in excess of six million and then BOOM - he's got that awful Whiley woman sharing his spot. I'd have effed off sooner. She is a joke.

And this kind of "helpful feedback" is why he's off. She's not awful, shes a damned good DJ - as is Simon. They just don't work together in that slot. If you read what Simon wrote, the change to a pairing was forced on him, so he chose to work with Jo.

Simon Mayo once lied to me at a Radio 1 roadshow.

Admittedly it's not quite "Yewtree" on the scale of "bad things done by DJs" but I've never forgiven him...

Two pages of R2 discussion and not a mention of Jeremy Vine?ย I'd happily see the back of him right after we've had Steve "no G" Wright taken out back and shot. Smug git who isn't half as bright as he thinks he is, seems to want to be a controversial interviewer by getting intelligent guests on and then countering their discussion with really stupid antagonistic points.ย And who TF chooses his topics de jour?ย "Today we'll be discussing whether vaccines cause autism, and the strange appearance of a blue post box in Putney."ย I'll bet one of my lesser used internal organs that he's a closet brexiter too.

Maybe replace him with his brother?

What really worries me is their choice of stand in presenters.....I mean Craig Charles!!!ย He's just appalling and I have to change channels.

I like Zoe and the Steve Wright show is just harmless fun, with some great music, but never really Like Simon Mayo.ย Jeremy Vine, hmmm....I think the format is more irritating than him, as they discuss some right old bollox on slow news days.

No, the presenter is the more irritating of that equation for sure.

Iโ€™m happy to report that when Jeremy Vine comes on the airwaves I turn him off, likewise the stupid gameshow patter he produces on the TV.

I do wonder as a % who is the โ€œbestestโ€ and who is the โ€œworstestโ€

Stats, we need some stats.

Craig Charles lacks charisma but plays some awesome tunes!

Jeremy Vine i like

Mayo i quite like too, and Kermode - but i do look forward to the weeks when they are not there! id really like one of them to go away at once with a stand in, rather than always both at the same time. id also like it if they had a permanent second critic to challenge Kermode. like when they used to have Boyd and Floyd on. James king was good, what happened to him? Robbie Collins is good too. Doc Brown is my fave stand in for Mayo. DB, Kermode and Collins - that would be a right show!!

i find myself listening to Wittertainment out of habit these days, and pressing the +15 seconds button quite a lot!! i like what they have to say but its all the ****y sycophantic listener correspondence, addled with in-jokes and catchphrases, which is unbearable.

who walks out of a cinema, goes home and writes a 3 page email about the film with no guarantee that it'll get read out? weirdos

It's just baffling what he's doing on the station. It's a music station, but they give 3(? I try to avoid at all costs) to a wannabe shock jock for the audio Jeremy Kyle show. Ditch him for a decent DJ, female if possible.

As for Craig Charles, I won't hear a word against him, he's excellent. He definitely does better in particular timeslots - Saturday night he's on fire, and when he stands in for Keaveny in the mornings he's good, but he clearly does a lot of prep to make those shows top notch.

I too am a fan of Craig Charles Funk/Soul show, granted its a late evening show so best listened to then than in the daytime.

Thing is he has a stigma attached that will taint his rise in the Beeb.

And yeah, in the daytime heโ€™s a bit of an oddball.

Well, Sara Cox played Blink 182 and Chemical Brothers on the R2 breakfast show this morning. I could live with this if it was on at drivetime...

Craig Charles is good, yeah his chat is sometimes mince but the tunes are good and he does come across as enthusiastic.

Vine or show? Both. Doesn't matter who the stand in is it's just drivel for the easily led. Once Ken Bruce is by it's off till Mayo, R4 occasionally getting a look in (unless I forget and accidentally catch Craig Charles standing in for the blob)

Hold on a minute lads, I think I have an idea.

Keep the Vine show, but replace him with Danny Dyer. Would laave to 'ear 'im tell some question dodging cahnt to get the the effin' point. Then a rant about arrogant ducks.

I thought the Simon Mayo show was great - foodie Thursday, book club, all request Friday - was just nice easy listening and entertaining.ย Wiley made it unbearableย so just listen to 6 Music now and never looked back so not complaining.

Wiley is fine by herself - the Mayo/Wiley combo just didn't work.

Sarah Cox sounds like a good move but doubt I'll ditch 6 Music now.

Oh, and Ken Bruce is a legend!

Could have written this myself. Also agree it's a nice contrast when they have the less self-referential stand-ins.

All the alternate presenters are decent enough but the woman critic (whose name I can't recall) is excruciatingly awkward on air. And often seems to review films in reference to their social media reception rather than their actual content.

Sheโ€™s called Clarisse! Dunno her 2nd name but her forename is easy to recall given itโ€™s a film show *does Hannibal impression* but yeah sheโ€™s a bit heavy on all the old feminist shit

That's it, Clarisse.

I'm down with the feminism but she just sounds uncomfortable as a broadcaster (partly her weird trans-Pacific drawl?) and I don't recall her offering a lot of insight.

Simon Mayo did the Radio 1 Roadshow in my hometownย when I was a teen. This was his opener.

'Good Morning Hunstanton, this is for you' and played Every day is Like Sunday.

No song could of better suited my grumpy teenage self, growing up in a seaside town.

She's awful. Partly because she's always paired with Edith Bowman, so you have this dreadful mix of accents: Edith Bowman's not-quite Scottish (her pronunciation of "character" makes the OH's skin crawl), and Clarisse's Boston/ English/ drawl/ twang/ thing. And as you say, both of them just sound really awkward, and like neither of them has actually done the job they're doing before. Mind you, Sanjeev is pretty annoying with his "well, when I was acting with Oliver Reed..." shtick. How Robbie Collin avoids jumping over the desk and nutting him I don't know.

I thought she had a semi-Aussie accent, but you may be right.

I don't mind Sanjeev or Edith at all, though I prefer the other stand-in presenter (Ben?). I have thought they should try splitting the women up if they want to persist with Clarisse, it often gets a bit too inane and nicey-nice.
