I think it was only a matter of time after they stuck Jo Whiley on the show with him.

I called it the moment Jo joined, in fact Iโ€™m sure this was the plan the whole time.

Still suits me, I like Jo and asking her to be involved in such nonsense as the Muppet Song was just odd.

I like Jo Whiley, her evening show was great

Iย  like Simon Mayo, his drivetime show was great

Jo and Simon on drivetime together didn't work

Radcliffe & Maconie is another "let's change and make things better" situation that seems to have been similarly ill-conceived

Absolutement. Zero chemistry.

Yeah it is absolutely horrendous to listen to. They don't even seem to like each other, let alone have any chemistry.

Never liked Simon Mayo, no real loss!

Thank god for that.

It's more like Simon and the awkward guest show.

Ohh 😳

I donโ€™t get to listen to the drive time show so Iโ€™m not that concerned.

On the occasions I did listen to it I found the pattern and format a bit at odds with each presenter.

Simon with his old crew was good.

Jo in her evening show was good.

Simon on his own is good.

Simon and Jo sounded cliched and forced.

I hope she carries on with the drive time slot though, because dear God R2 needs more Women on it in the daytime FerrrrChristsake...🤨

Only positive I can see (I've enjoyed Mayo in the evening) is that Sara Cox might be willing to do this slot, where I'm pretty sure she turned down the breakfast show. I would be quite happy with this.

Makes you wonder if Jo will carry on solo..

Doubt Coxy and Whiley would make a good mix..🤷‍♂️

Inevitable. Getting paired with Jo Whiley is the radio equivalent of getting pulled into a black hole. No entertainment can escape from that.

I expect the bosses have just got the listener figures back and are quite happy to end their partnership too...

She's moving to a new evening show, so the drive time slot sounds like it will get a fresh start.

My money's on Sara Cox for the drivetime show. They came under a lot of flak for having an all male day time lineup, so they stuck Jo Whiley in there, I can't imagine having moved her back out to the evening (probably a good thing IMO, she was good there) they'll stick another bloke back in the schedule.

Shame, I like listening to Mayo.

Whiley? Not so much.

They're both strong individual presenters, it's how each of them has pretty much always presented. Putting them together was just the BBC trying to force a square peg (more female representation on R2) into a round hole (a show that was working absolutely fine as it was, which would never work with two such strong presenters together in it).

Mayo is a superb broadcaster, quite understated but very on point, putting him with Whiley has been a disaster. Zero chemistry.

That god god he is going to carry on with the good doctor.

Seems Joโ€™s going to evenings, if thatโ€™s not an admission that it didnโ€™t work I donโ€™t know - still might be a decent listen when Iโ€™m cooking diner, Radio X is becoming a chore, same 6/8 songs everyday, same adverts too.

Iโ€™d love Coxy for drive time, I was hoping sheโ€™d get breakfast.

Thank heavens for that. An awful show. I loved the earlier format, but the two of them together just didn't work for me. I enjoyed Jo's evening show, but there was spark between them.

Sorry that Mayo is leaving, Sarah Cox gets my vote for the replacement.

Just typical of the Bedb to constantly alter things. Change for changes sake. You'd think they'd have learned something by now.

Need to get rid of Steve Wright now, heโ€™s been saying the same boring crap for years.....

I'm reckon she did, but turned it down due to the enormous disruption of an early morning show to her family. An evening show might not be any better for her, but I hope otherwise...

Theyโ€™ll have to prise that show from his cold dead hands, it ones of the greatest mysteries of the universe how heโ€™s managed to hold on to it for so long.

When I use to listen to drive time I use to like Mayo but haven't listened for over a year. Have never been a fan of jo whiley even when she was on Radio 1

Sounds of the 60s still going? And Ken Bruce? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Both of which need to join Steve Wright..

Good. He's the smuggest man in Britain, just in front of Mark Kermode.

I like Jo Whiley, but she's much more suited to the early evening music slot.

He's format has never changed for 20 odd years, find him dull.

His interviewing actors, directors on his film show is really good, if you find him dull fake enough.

His interviews were good, but the self congratulatory 'bantz' between him and Kermode make me nauseous.

Plus his 'I'm far too important to move to Salford' schtick made him look like an arsehole.

Have to admit to enjoying listening to Simon, think he comes across as calming, knowledgableย and amusing, which is what I need on my drive home from work.
Not a fan of "Coxy". A little too in your face for me. I just don't think she would be a good fit for the Radio 2 Drive time audience. She seems to be the complete opposite of Mayo, noisy in a me me me way, doesn't come across as being particularly bright and not very amusing.

Also like Jo though, would have liked for her to get the gig solo. Again she's someone else who doesn't appear to make the show about her, she makes the show about the listeners, the music and her guests. I honestly thought she could have grown into the role and developed it for herself.

And completely agree about Steve Wright, he must have some dark secrets on the BBC big wigsย otherwise surely he'd have been booted to local radio years ago.

It's weird, when they're not on I realise Robbie Collin is a far FAR better film reviewer than Kermode, at least on the radio. But as a show Mayo and Kermode is a far better show than any of the substitutes.

Glad it's not just me.

Some say sarcasm is the lowest form of wit, but I reckon it's catchphrases.

Still listen for the actual film content though.

Iโ€™m far too important to move to Salfordโ€™ schtick

What, the: "I don't want to uproot my family for a radio show." schtick? If putting your family over your career makes you an arsehole, then fair enough. Considering he then landed the R2 drivetime show, and they let him carry on doing stuff for R5L, I'd say he probably assessed the situation pretty well.

I know, he went right on up in my estimations when he said that.

I mean, whoย would want to move to Salford willingly ?

We live in a world of remote working and the Beeb have been doing such for decades. Even to the point of installing studios in peopleโ€™s back gardens..

There was a DJ recently who resigned who had his studio in some remote corner of Scotland.. the bloke had been at the Beeb, on the radio, for something like 50 years..

Just because the Beeb moved to MadChester to take advantage of cheap housing and rental costs doesnโ€™t mean all employees should up sticks and wander North with a picnic on a stick jauntily swaying over thier right shoulder.

Hey you leave Ken Bruce alone.

His Pop master is superb entertainment. He's funny, witty, clever and he speaks properly with good grammar.

Yep, been a fan of Ken's deceptively sharp wit for 20 years. A national treasure.

Was a bit shocked by the announcement early today, but it didn't surprise me after the reshuffle snafu...

I'm no fan of Whiley but accept she's good in the evening timeslot hanging out with all the cool names - but find her a bit Too Cool for School for my liking.

Mayo, however, i find very easy to listen to and the Confessions podcast has been required listening for yonks.

And i'm sooo relieved that the Church will continue with the good Doctor!

...so it's a continued Hello to Jason Isaacs/FairportConvention/Focus etcย  ;0)
