Me and a mate have decided to start training again. We both got black belts in karate and I went on to do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and a bit of MMA. Then we got into our 30s, work and family life took over, and our bodies couldn't take the stress of having 10 bells of shit brayed out of them. But recently over beer we've been reminiscing and talking about starting again and now we've got somewhere to do it and some equipment ordered. Anybody else miss youthful pastimes or specifically gone back to martial arts? We've decided to avoid the full contact stuff and just stick with a lot of exercise/stretching/bagwork and some light sparring. Can't wait to get started!
You got me jealous, I really miss being fit and stretchy, but I keep coming up with excuses not to do it again. (kung-fu then tae-kwon do and a little bit of amature gymnastics) I kind of feel that I couldnt do what I use to do because my body has changed too much (age and accidents). Let us know how you get on , maybe there is hope yet!
I've recently dug out some unmade airfix fits, glue, paint and brushes from my teens.
Not quite teh same I guess.
If the body can't take it how about trying out Tai Chi. I always used to take the mic about asking people to attack you in slow motion... but turns out it's really good for balance & flexibility. And you get to play with swords 🙂
Lol @ cynic-al. I keep getting the urge to spin down the model shop and by the huge Spitfire kit that my parents could never afford!
Often contemplate restarting my martial arts studies (Karate, Kempo, Kung Fu, Muay Thai) but maybe going down a lower impact path, maybe Wing Tsun. It's finding the time though. Barely get out on my bike enough.
Climbing trees and getting my hands into teenage girls pants at the school disco.
Halycon days.
They had trees at your school disco?
No but plenty of bush

haha too right boardin bob. a bottle of cider on the way there and all the lasses suddenly seemed appealing!
Don't really fancy tai-chi, although i bought books and studied it. i miss the groundwork in jiu jitsi more than anything - it's real and reasonably safe.
speaking of models, i was drawn into the model shop in york the other week. the scalextrics look very very tempting. so ****ing expensive though.
Did ju jitsu late teens early twenties and got to brown. Always regretted not getting my dan grade. 41 now and not sure my body could take the punishment. Still got my gi somewhere.
I still train/teach yoshinkan aikido and I'm 35. Good fun and relatively safe.
I didn't start doing japanese jui~jitsu until i was 32.Got to brown belt but then changed to brazilian jui~jitsu 18 months ago.36 now and really enjoy rolling with the "young pups".Although my body knows about the next day.Theres a bloke who i train with who recently was awarded his purple belt(a good achievement in BJJ )and he's 57. 😯
The martial arts training I did involved bayonets and .303s - very effective.
But I think I would be very unpopular if I started doing it again. 🙂
Still do judo at 36, planning on going for my 3rd Dan in June. Lost some flexibility and a wee bit of strength but cunning and artifice have got better. Mind you have done it since I was about 7.
We have quite a few adult beginners at our club and they love it though they def feel it the next day.
Bruk - I used to do a bit of judo too but found the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu much more fun - less fussy rules and more freedom once on the ground. Wouldn't mind going back and doing a bit though - I'd certainly say it was a lot more useful form of self-defence than most of the striking arts (with Muay Thai the exception)and damn good for fitness.
All I remember about my martials arts stuff (Muay Thai), was getting my head kicked in a lot. It was nice being able to look after myself (but to be honest it got me into a lot more fights than it got me out of) but I've no inclination to go back to it. If I did start again I'd try Judo. Need to get some contact lenses sorted though.
edit: I will add that I'll occassionally dig out my old flails and bokken and have a quick mess around, I enjoy them.
I have always done it for fun mostly, was quite competitive to a reasonable standard when a child and at Uni but now its a sport for enjoyment.
Used it one or twice in self defence over the years but thankfully never had to use it too much, unlke some friends in Dundee. 2 of them got jumped by 4/5 neds. The polis picked up 1 of the neds later walking home clutching his broken arm. Still cost my friend a lot of time and stress in police time and court. So much he actually regretted breaking the guys arm.
