Its a horrible expensive bit of software, try Zone Alarm for your firewall - Free.
Try Avira or PC Tools for your Anti Virus - Free. Don't give Norton your money!

Recent reviews of Norton have said that it's much improved. I got hacked of with Zone Alarm deciding not to start itself when my pooter booted, leaving me with only my modem firewall until I noticed 🙁

You didn't have the zone alarm set right then simon - it runs at bootup on both my puters.

Worse than any spyware for crippling your machine.

SFB - why do you need ZA if you have hardware firewall? Can you not trust yourself not to click on / start any dodgy programs?

it was set to, but it didn't, and ZA just gave me a runaround

hardware is inbound only...

Free is best.
Used both below on 3 laptops + 2 PCs for last 3 years no problems.

Anti Virus - Avast Home Edition.
Firewall - Comodo firewall

Norton? Urghhh horrible horrible stuff that gets so far into your puter I'm not sure you can get rid of it cleanly. Yuck 👿

AVG and a nice hardware firewall is a good system although a decent firewall will cost £££ it'll protect everything inside it rather than trusting a software firewall on every PC.

I'd rather have the time I'd take to work that out for other stuff...

I just use Avast and the firewall in my router.
Just don't run random crap and keep Windows up-to-date. Never had any issues.

I would only add a software firewall on an uncontrolled network, like a public wifi.

The busiest app on my pen drive "toolkit" is Norton Removal Tool. It is worse than many viruses (virii). Get rid. AVG or Avast and if you really think you need a software firewall (you probably don't) and think that you can configure it properly then Comodo or similar. I still put sygate on some PCs.

Whilst we're on the subject, should I stick with my Avast and Windows firewall, or should I take up the offer of free software from my ISP?

BT Netprotect (McAfee) includes anti-spyware, anti-virus, firewall, siteadvisor, identity theft protection and anti phishing. (they've just switched from Norton)

I don't use the BT browser, and hate stuff that intrudes and flashes up splash screens etc so don't want to install it all if I then have to spent a couple of hours clearing it all off again!

Norton/Symantec products are great as corporate solutions, but uncontrolable bloatware when used at home.

Download a copy of the Symantec product removal tool (uninstalling still leaves some filter drivers in the IP stack which stops other vendor's suites from updating successfully) and then get something like Avast or AVG to look after antivirus duties.

If you've got a decent router with a proper built-in firewall running (so linksys, 3com, siemens, BT, netgear), you shouldn't need much more than that and windows firewall to provide access protection from the outside world.

Very few corporate networks I visit use personal firewalls like zone alarm. I can think of 1, but they're bonkers.

Bonkers indeed! AFAIK if you have anything like a network (we've got 3 laptops and a desktop just in the house, not including the 4 servers and 4 desktops in the office) then you're much better off putting your protection at the perimiter rather than messing around with protecting individual PCs. AVG in the PCs.
Our setup is Netgear ADSL router with its basic firewall built in feeding data to a Sonicwall firewall from there it's fed to the 'puters.
Worked 100% for the last 9 years.

I just had my PC in for work and Norton was due for renewal also... the tech removed Norton ( I always had problems with it interfering with connection to internet ) and uploaded Avast.

I'm very happy with that so far.

Im in the AVG camp, I use my router's firewall and Vista's own; never have any probs. always scan the stuff you download and beware of unsolicited emails.

used norton a while back...biggest resource-hungry over hyped POS i have ever encountered and a bugger to get off!

hardware is inbound only...

Though software outbound is all but useless - any virus worth it's salt will get straight round that. Only really useful for denying internet access to legit programs you don't want to phone home.

if your thinking of resubscribing to norton.. your the sort of person who deserves all it's effects 😉

joking aside, get rid of it NOW, get avast or kaspersky if you want to pay for a solution (they are faster and less obtrusive that AVG)

if you want something free, a little slower and not as slick get AVG.. simple.

Personally i buy Avast, it includes 7-9 levels of protection depending what software you use (i don't use e-mail programs like outlook express or outlook so avast disables the plugin's) quietly updates, runs, monitors and even blocks spyware and firewalls against well known exploits on firewalls (inc windows, some h/w firewalls on routers or even over the lan, more common infection is a usb pen drive is infected plugged into a outside pc, your partner plugs it into a laptop elsewhere in the house and it spreads over the internal LAN, the firewall can do **** all for you then, avast has rules and blocks to prevent such infection)

true, i totally forget. you can get a 14 month no hassle version of avast...

all they want is an email address, they only mail you after 13 months to remind you to buy or to re register..

always forget avast home is free.. thx

More important these days is a good antispyware prog as well as an antivirus.

I'd say AVG/Avira/Avast, Spybot and Superantispyware along with windows firewall should be enough behind a hardware firewall, and obviously not using IE. Onecare Safety Scanner is worth using every month or two as well...

If your using public wireless or a usb modem I'd recommend Filseclab firewall.
