I can no longer browse the web on my phone or use apps that need an internet connection. When I click in the 'Internet' icon I get what I expect i.e. choices including 'recent pages' etc. The problemis that when I select a recent page, bookmark or new web address it just goes back to the previous page. It does not, as I would expect, ask me how I want to connect - WLAN or WAP.

Now I do think I know what I've done wrong but I can't work out how to fix it. I'm staying in a hotel with wireless and when you connect there's a logon screen. The last time I got it to work OK I closed that screen and got a warning, something like "If you close this you will not be able to close the internet connection manually". I clicked 'OK' assuming that, while I wouldn't be able to close the connection manually it would close automatically if I did something simple like exit the web browser or switch the phone off.

Now the little WLAN icon (looks like a radio mast) is permanently on. If I click on it, I get the message that the network is available and I have the optoin to 'connect' but not 'disconnect'. So I think the phone is in some state of confusion. I think it either is or thinks it is still connected to the WLAN on a page that's in some way hidden or not closed properly.

I have tried to following:
~ connecting to and disconnecting from the hotel WLAN
~ switching it off and on again
~ taking the battery out
~ restoring factory defaults

I have done all of these both within range of the WLAN and 20 miles away!

Complicating factors....
~ it is my own phone but I only have my work laptop with me (with various security restrictions)
~ for some unknown reason, Nokia PC Suite (which is installed) on my work laptop is not running - asks me to re-insert the installation CD which I don't have (and would prob need admin rights for anyway)
~ for some unknown reason, the Nokia Support discussion boards crash my work laptop browser

If you've read all that, I cna only assume you're really interested in (and knowledgeable about) Nokia phones so can anyone offer any help. I guess what I'm looking for is some sort of harder reboot/reset than I've managed so far. There are no OVI apps on here that I'm desperate to keep - would happily reload them when I get to my own laptop. I would want to keep the music and photos that are on here though so wouldn't want to do anything to risk them. The music is more useful to me than the web-browser and I've not backed the pics up anywhere.

Found it on OVI forum:

Press and hold GREEN + RED + CAMERA when powering up.

Keep the keys pressed until you get the shaking hands. That should fully reset the device, with a lock code of 12345.

This is only available on phones with 20.0.012 or later.

And *#0000# will tell you what version firmware you're using right now.

If Your firmware is older than there should be an option to download newer version (did that not so long ago, but can't remember where it was). Maybe an firmware update would sort things out as well, you don't need nokia PC suit as the phone does all the work.

If You want to keep all the apps and music/photos it would be best to copy them to the memory card and take it out of the phone before resetting.

Hope it works.

Spot on advice meiszko! This is the only way to totally reset the phone.

The latest version of OVI software has a firmware update facility as well as backup and data sharing/reading functionality. OVI Suite therefore renders Nokia Suite obsolete.

Thanks - that seems to have worked (though I now seem to have a problem connecting to the hotel WLAN anyway)
