Waiting for a heart op, after finding out I have Wolff parkinson white syndrome. Been training for a marathon and an ECG found it. So Been told not to exert myself, so that means no biking or running.
So after some good inspiring books, I am just finishing "Born to Run" and recently read, Vroom with a view, vroom by the sea, patagonia story, and a couple of surf ones.
Jonathan Franzen - The Corrections, Freedom
It's an old one so you may have already read it but if not 'The Escape Artist' by Matt Seaton is very good.
Hope you don't have to wait too long to get yourself sorted.
I found The Selected Works of TS Spivet by Reif Larsen an excellent and very unusual book.
If you like running
Foot Prints On The Water- Larry Tracey
Ultra Marathon Man - Dean Karnazes
For cycling the Josie Dew books are good.
+1 Josie Dew
Head on/repossessed - Julian Cope
Oh and 'Olympic Gangster: The Legend of José Beyaert - Cycling Champion, Fortune Hunter and Outlaw' sounds ace but I've not yet read it!
The Lucifer Box novels from Mark Gatiss are good. Vesuvius Club, black butterfly and I can't remember other one. Also Michael Marshall smith or the ones he wrote as Michael Marshall.
EDIT: Oh and I really enjoyed American Desert by Percival Everett too.
Bit of an oddball inspirational one but Wild Swans by Jung Chang
Sorry about your illness, but at least it has a cool name 😉
Alistair Reynolds, the trilogy that I can't remember the name of. Or The Wire/Sopranos/BSG box set?
This is a good thread for Sci-Fi, Horror & Noirish crime.

Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage to the Antarctic
The Right Stuff
Whilst I feel woefully inept at the task of providing you with a suitable book to peruse whilst off your feet, I can wholeheartedly recommend this bit of tipple to you and I hope that it may complement the array of literary gems that other people have listed above:
Shantaram - Gregory David Roberts
The Rum Diary - Hunter S Thompson
I've started reading Lord of the Rings again...not bad.
Thunder Run has been recommended 😯 Did that really happen.
Mad bad and dangerous to know - ranuloh fiennes
Bike snobs book
We were young and carefree - laurent fignon
Blood sweat amd tea
Slash's autobiography is a hoot.
Bit of an obvious one these days but if you like your Tolkien thing have a go at the game of thrones.
to be honest game of thrones is better than lord of the rings, i was a bit it is okay upto halfway into the first novel and now am just finshing the fourth book. clever stuff well written and bloody enjoyable.
Got something that should be right up your street.
"Let my people go surfing." By Yvon Chouinard (Founder of outdoor clothing company.... Patagonia.)
Fermat's Last Theorem
yes, read this, but if you are laid up for a long time, try proving it instead. Should pass a few hours.
I enjoy books by Stephen Fry for a light read and by Hesse for something more demanding.

Changed my life that one did.
127 hours is a good read.
Just been rereading Joe Simpson's books, starting with Touching the Void, which is a classic...but his later books are really thought provoking in a different way.
Not always out and out inspiring but he asks good questions about why people do things like climbing and how they justify it.
Random selection from my book shelf next to me....
Papillon
Catch-22
Bad Blood
Cryptonomicon
In search of Robert Millar
1984
As I walked out one summer morning. Laurie Lee.
