Has simonfbarnes been banned? I think he recommended this DSLR
I have up to £800 to spend on body and wide angle lens. I have a telephoto with a Nikon AF mount and would prefer to stay Nikon. Can any other user recommend this camera for photos that may need to go up to single page magazine size?
I've had one of these for 4 weeks, i'm no expert but love it, super quality photos, does everything i want 😛
Excellent camera very light and easy to use/learn. Which wide lens are you thinking of you buying? I have the 10-24 from Tamron, good pictures but slow indecisive AF.
I've had one for two days now, it is very very good. Quick, light, configurable, HD vid (10 min per clip), huge ISO range, good viewfinder and live view, shoots in RAW mode + JPEGs, loads of programmes and flash modes, good selection of metering and AF styles.
Bought my daughter one for Christmas and very impressed!! The low-light image quality is excellent!
My D90 has been faultless. A bit older now so cheaper but superb for the money.
DavidB is your telephoto lens a AFS version?
The only thing that put me off going for the D3100 (I went for a D90) was compability with older lens.
You only get AF with the AFS/AFI lenses so type G AF D will not autofous on that body (you can still use them in MF).

Check out the D90 if you want to use those lenses in the future.
If this is not a problem for you, then the D3100 is a great camera.
How wide did you want to go for the lens btw?
I have a D5000 and it is very good probably too much camera for my very modest skills but the quality of images I can get is fantastic. I find it much easier to use and more ergonomic than my Dads Sony A350, Not to mention the auto focus on the Sony is bloody loud!
And the compatibility with old lenses is an issue for me. I cant get cheap old lenses off ebay unless I want to MF them.
Thanks all. The telephoto is AF D so looks like it won't autofocus, I will glance again at the D90.
I could do with some advice on wide angle, basically looking to get some nice landscapes with cyclists in.
ps. What has happened to simonfbarnes?
What would you like to know about wide angle?
I didn't find the 17mm of my 17-50 2.8 Tamron wide enough so I bought the 10-24mm. As I said it is generally a very good lens - soft corners though wide open at the 10mm end and also the AF motor is slooooow. It is a brilliant lens apart from that.
The 10-20 Sigma AFs a lot faster but I think it lacks a bit on the IQ (more distrotion and not as sharp) aspect and it was more expensive. In the end I didnt buy it because I thought the extra 4mm on the tele end would help keep me from changing with my normal lens (I was wrong, the wide one is used mostly at its very wide end the next useful to me focal length is 35 - anyone making a 10-35mm lens 2.8 preferably :p). Never tried the Nikkor 10-24mm but then again I didn't want to spend £500+.
There is also the Tokina 11-16 2.8 but I heard it is not very sharp wide open, the angle is very restricted and it does not AF on my D40 so I skipped it.
