I doubt it’s a route driven often...Friday afternoon I’m heading from Pembroke to Castleton.
I know the route through mid Wales to Shrewsbury or Wrexham well but which way after that? Shrewsbury-Stoke-Buxton?
Motorways to Manchester and down?
Maps and Google can’t seem to agree on the best way...ideally a fun drive with no traffic!
Which was would you go?
Ta
M4, up m5, M6 then foow Google as to where to come off, in fact just ask Google and follow that will be the quickest in the end.
From memory though off at Stoke a500 up through leek and over from there would be about right
I'd go A483, M56, turn off at Manchester Airport, across the new link to the A6. As Google suggests for me.
Shrewsbury, Stoke, Leek, Buxton would be my choice. Yes it adds about 30 mins to a 5 hr ish trip, but keeps you off the Motorways and you’ll pass at lest a half dozen greasy buttie vans or places to pit stop
Id imagine non of the routes are going to be “fun to drive” when your stuck in the car for 5hrs plus
Get Waze on your phone, it will sort out the optimum route and steer you away from traffic jams etc (and warn you about lots of things). It's excellent.
From Sheffield I've always gone M1, A/M42, M5, M50, A40, A449, M4.
Its a lot of different roads but its ok, normally takes 6 hrs including stops.
@lister - not going up for the BHF peaks ride are you?
Facebook post from this morning:
Good morning everyone.
To give you all a small update, we just wanted to thank everyone who has been in touch regarding concerns over the weather. We are fully aware of the conditions forecast and will be making a decision on whether to go ahead or postpone later this afternoon - once we've had an opportunity to complete an assessment of the current conditions of the route, and review the forecasted conditions. The last thing we want to do is postpone, however, our primary responsibility has to be ensuring we are not putting the health and safety of you (our participants) or the volunteers due to be working/marshalling the event at any unnecessary risk. Furthermore, we are also fully aware of our responsibilities as event organisers not to cause long term & lasting damage to the trails in the area and this is a factor that will be informing our decision.
Once all of these factors have been weighed up, we will provide all participants with an update on this page, and a range of other channels.
Thank you for your patience, and as always for your support of our life saving work.
Keep an eye on the event page as to whether it's cancelled
I'm going from Llandrindod to Calver on Saturday morning for a demo on a Cotic.
Will be going up via a483 oswestry then m56 I think it is, across that way.
We often drive up to family nearer to Derby and go a44 crossgates to penybont them whatever the road is to Knighton, craven arms, m54 a38. So that's an alternative which you could then go a6 from derby, or a52 to ashbourne, depending where in the peaks you are going.
Maybe via Castlefield and then likes of Bakewell and Buxton then wind way through various Peak and Dale villages off the main road toward Castelton depending on how much time you have.
Thanks folks, food for thought. A 5 hour drive doesn’t bother me, my folks live in Rothbury so 9/10 hour drives have been a regular part of my life for 20 years.
I’m not heading for that event, just a silly boy’s weekend of riding and beer. The weather looks lovely...might be more beer than riding!
Shrewsbury, Long Lane cafe on the A442, B5062, A519 to Eccleshall, B5026 to Stone, A520
