Ironic, given that it was a superb parody of a Hip-Hop tune - a genre itself defined by sampling.
Fail indeed. I'd love an mp3 of this if anyone got one, SO funny.
But whichever way you look at it, Newport State of Mind was far more entertaining than Alicia Keys. Perhaps that's what really stung.
As GLC proved, British artists taking the piss out of w4nky Yankee bullshit consumer culture is simply more fun than the 'originals'. And shows it up as the fake, shallow characterless shite it really is (I quite like the original of this particular song though). I just hope this action by EMI brings loads more publicity to the people that did the video, and pisses EMI off even more.
I'm prepared to fight NoTeeth for the affections of the female singer though. I'm a bit worried that he has no teeth to lose, whereas I have a full set.
Humour failure indeed. hardly surprising from a company like EMI though
And the record companies wonder why people don't care about illegally downloading music when they act like this...
GLC not too chuffed either:

not from Newport

unlimited supply
And there is no reason why
I tell you it was all a frame
They only did it 'cos of fame
Who?
E.M.I. E.M.I. E.M.I.

LOL.
I have other... assets. 😈 😉
im still laughing at the video and i saw it about 3 weeks ago...
the americans are going to have one hell of a shock when they come to 'The Port'
You're not from Newport
I understand the reasons for GLC's response, and much as I love 'em, it kinda misses the spirit of the thing, imo. 'Newport' fits the original lyrics better than anything else in the UK, and the result was pretty generalised (South Wales) - but beautifully done. A bunch of non-Port (but half Welsh, iirc) kids took a running joke and did a smashing job of it. Safe clart!
If you liked that, try Glasgow State of Mind
Concrete jungle where dreams are ruined
Everyone's on the broon
Love it.
Never having seen this, all of a sudden I want to... anyone know where it's still available?

Pushy lawyers threatening allsorts - youtube shouldn't have taken it down, its clearly parody and parody doesn't infringe copyright under UK or US law.
Check out this for another ridiculous example of heavy handed legal nonsense in the music industry:
Universal Music Publishing has confirmed that it has asked that Mike Love and Brian Wilson be credited as co-songwriters on the recent Katy Perry hit 'California Gurls', because at the end of it Snoop Dogg raps the immortal line "I really wish you all could be California girls", which comes from the Beach Boys song 'California Girls', of course. The co-credit requested by Universal isn't just so Love and Wilson can enjoy the warm glow of having officially contributed to one of these new fangled raps, but because the music major wants a royalty cut for use of the line.
cheers noteeth, very good.

That's interesting. And of course, Weird Al Jancovic made a career (ie earned lots of money) from making parody records, although I don't know the particular details of any deals/permissions granted there.
I can't see how this damages the artists of the original in any way, in fact surely it publicises the original song? The people behind Newport... aren't attempting to make money off it, so I don't see the problem. And if it's on YouTube, it doesn't infringe the same broadcasting regulations like TV and radio, surely?
Surely a pretty clear case of "imitation for the purposes of spoof or parody" (or whatever the exact wording is) which means it is fair use?
Ahh the joys of the DMCA...
