MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
finally replaced our very ancient tube TV with a flat screen and amazingly with wife's blessing have the go-ahead to put some form of external speaker system on it... but i hav'nt got a clue.
i'll be looking to buy used, the room is not that big and i would like reasonably discreet, can anyone point in the right direction of what kit i need (av reciever?) and offer some bargain used recommendations please? not really after super mega expensive or the latest gadget, quite happy with a few years old but definitely better than an argos surround sound package.
Depends how large you want to go.
Cambridge audio stuff is pretty good IMHO.

Refurb small speaker system - Any of the Minx range is probably worth considering.
If you want something a little larger, I use a couple of old Azur 540r receivers, which were cheap bargains from new, and are now VERY cheap indeed. If you have an Optical connection I'd use that from the DVD player, and component or HDMI to the TV [please double check this stuff, I use mine as poweramps, no AV attached].
Clearly, this is then going to be attached to loudspeakers of some sort. Secondhand speakers can be a bit of a minefield, I'm not going to link to any on here because you'd need to inspect the roll surrounds for rot. Foam types are particularly vulnerable. Here's a truely b0rked one:

Again, speaking from personal experience, as a DVD and /cd player, the [now rather old] Sony DVP-NS900V is a nice piece of kit with lovely stereo playback, and remarkable DVD image quality. I used to use mine with a good Sanyo projector and using the component output.
Last words, with secondhand HiFi, I find Cash Converters and similar a god place to shop, as you can usually try or return stuff as may be appropriate, and they often offer a warranty.
Best of luck, Sam
I've just bought a used Roth soundbar from Amazon - I wanted just a bit of something to pep up the sound from the TV, not overly bothered for true surround. Has bluetooth so I can play music from my phone through it. Not arrived yet so can't tell you what it's like, but reviews look promising.
£88 for a "like new" one

Buy your hi fi of choice. Plug the audio out from the telly into one of the hi fi inputs.
