I am due an upgrade on my current HTC One M8. Not blown away by any of the phones out on the market at the moment, so wondered if anyone has any other suggestions on what’s good out there?

I would prefer android, a good camera, speakers and decent sized screen, but that’s about it. Considering buying my own handset and getting a sim only contract, anyone else gone down this line?

Why not keep your current handset and go SIM only with BT, Giff Gaff, Three etc?

Been on SIM only for 2 years now with BT and it's been hassle free and I'm not paying over the odds for a handset that doesn't do much differently to my current one.
Can't see the need for a new phone anytime soon and this ones up to nearly 4 years now.

Can be a good idea to go Sim Only
I pay £12 a month for hours and hours of minutes, unlimited texts and 18gb of 4G data, though I have extra data offers from previous contracts. You can probably get about 8gb for that which should be fine.

I bought a couple of months old Nexus 5X for £200 off eBay.

If you think about how much extra you pay per month for the phone and then add it up over the whole contract term it starts to add up

ah, the one thing I didn't mention is that my current phone is dying a death. Will look at the contract only options though.

What's up with it? Factory reset?

I've got its predecessor the M7. O2 rang me when my contract expired. "Hi, you're eligible for a new phone, would you want to stick with HTC or do you fancy an iPhone?"

"I'm quite happy with the phone I've got, thanks."

"Oh, er, well, which of our new tariffs would you like to move to?"

"I'm quite happy with the one I'm on, thanks." (It's cheaper than anything newer and I don't need a thousand minutes and a terabyte of data.)

"Oh, er, um."

"Bye."

My standard answer at the moment... One plus 3.

Plain and simple android, only a couple of subtle and very useful tweaks. Unlike Samsung, HTC etc who all make a hash of the interface.

Very rapid charging, excellent battery life, excellent camera, very fast!!

Thanksfully I'm not in a position where I need the cash specifically to buy bike products, I've got a new one coming in December anyway!

The camera screen on the phone is cracked, and the speakers have stopped give out full power, so can't use speaker phone on it. Also the phone seems to have trouble picking up when headphones are plugged in.

Have looked at reviews of ZTE's and they seem to come out well so may look at those and go sim only and buy one of those. I seem to use a lot of data, but not a lot of calls or txts, usually they are free these days though.

I'm in a similar position to the OP. My Sony Z3 died and i've been stuck with an iphone 5 for the last few weeks and due to upgrade in a couple of weeks.

My current thinking is the Galaxy S7 ( not edge ) as its reasonably cheap on contracts, not too big, loads of expandable storage space and in reality when compared to the S7 edge, I think the screen is better. Cant help but feel that you lose usable screen space on the S7 edge as it curves away. Its nice to look at, but functionally limited.

But its biggest draw is its camera. My old Z3 was meant to have a good camera - it didn't, it was waaay too slow and disappointing everytime ( despite all the reviews saying how good it was ). When I've tried the S7 camera, i've been impressed by how quick it is all round. Instant focus, and instant return to taking another picture. Which is a feature I really am wanting.

There are a lot of shots that I would have liked to take in the past, but have missed because the Z3 was to slow to capture. I want to be able to grab the phone out the pocket and very quickly take that shot, and feel that the picture taken is likely a good, in focus one. Anytime I've tried the S7, thats the performance I've found from it. The reviews seem to back up the picture quality in most lights as well.

Yes, I do accept that Samsung adds software on top of the base Android, but realistically its still going to perform the all phone functions that you need from it - and do that very well. Across all the phones and OS's I've tried through the years, they have all be able to make/take calls and send text messages etc. To me, its what else you can get from the phone, and a high priority is the pictures. IF they are good, then I can live with the odd nuance of OS quirks.

I was about to say keep the M8 and unlock, root and install the Google play Edition ROM on it to get rid of all the HTC apps that they keep throwing at the phone to fill up it's memory and force you to upgrade. After all that's what I did and it's running better than it has in months.

As your phone is a bit knackered I'd suggest the Motorola G4 as my son has just got one and seems pretty happy with it so far.

I've just been randomly looking at BT mobile and for existing BT customers, their sim only deals seem almost too good to be true until midnight tonight...

https://www.topcashback.co.uk/bt-mobile/ gives £31.50 / £52.50 / £73.50 for the 500MB/ 2GB/ 15GB Plans respectively.

Until tonight you can claim an Amazon gift card worth £20/40/80 respectively.

For existing BT customers, the 12 month contract plan is £5/10/16pcm.

So overall, if you stick to the inclusive allowances for each package, over 12 months they will effectively cost £8.50/ £27.50 / £38.50

The BT packages are http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/mobile/sim-only-deals/ and for some the family/friend packs might be attractive.

HTC 10.

Almost stock Android, great camera, rapid charging and a two day battery and the best audio sound on the market.
