Looking to build new drive train for my Rock Lobster. I have a Shimano SLX drive train fitted at the moment, which I find to be quite decent besides two aspects:

1) I very rarely use the granny ring, therefore would like a 2x10 setup.
2) Really miss my Sram twist shifter's, can't get used to triggers.

Parts I have shortlisted are :

2X10 Sram X0 twisters.
2x10 Sram X0 RD

Would like a Shimano XT Crank but believe these are Dyna-sys and not sure of compatibility?
And some advice on choosing a suitable FD and chain.

Any advice or suggestions would be really appreciated.

Dyna-Sys is Shimano's word for 10 speed, it'll be fine.
As for FD, pick one you like and can afford, I'm a Shimano fan myself and your current mech will do the job. No compatibility issues there IIRC, same with the chain, as long as its 10 speed specific.

Are you moving from 9spd to 10spd?
If so the only thing you'll be able to retain are the cranks and possibly front mech. Chain, cassette, shifters and rear mech are all different.

Yes I'm moving from 9 speed to 10 speed, sorry i forgot to mention that. Thanks for your replies. So to sum up Dyna-sys cranks are ok with normal 10 speed stuff, even if its Sram?

Yes; Dyna-sys is just Shimano's branding for 10 speed, like Mega-9 was for their previous 9 speed stuff.

You've got the most important thing figured out in that the shifter has to match the rear derailleur as SRAM and Shimano use different cable pull.

I apologise in advance, as this is not a very helpful post, but I do wonder where all you 2x10 riders live. I live in the not very hilly north east of England and use my granny ring almost every time I go uphill. If it wasn't there, I'd be off and walking.

Spent a half a day at Hamsterley on Monday and almost every vertical metre was gained on the smallest ring up front, and I'm not a slouch. Perhaps I'm failing to understand something basic about ratios.

Honest question...

2x10 rider here in mid-Wales, can pedal up a local fire road climb from hell that starts at 1:5, rapidly goes to 1:4 for a good while and finishes with a short section close to 1:3. And that was using 42:28 on the front :).

Its not fun and keeping the front on the ground while retaining traction on the rear is a bit of a mare and impossible when rally cars/MXers have been ripping up/down it

My 2x10 setup has 24/36 at the front,but then I'm Fatboyslow really.

Most proper 2x10 set ups have a small ring that's between a triple granny and middle, and an outer that's between middle and outer - ie: 24/36 or 26/38 or similar. So you don't lose the granny ratios, only the very lowest granny gear and now most 10spd rears go to 36T you don't lose that much anyway

lowest gear on a 3x9 would be 22:32 (0.69) or 22:34 (0.65)

lowest gear on a 2x10 would be either 24:36 (0.67) or 26:36 (0.72) so no big difference, and if you really have to use the absolute lowest chances are you're better off walking anyway.
