@chakaping Did you watch the short film showing the behind the scenes/making of Pinocchio?
Very good and the detail/mechanics of some of the models are incredible.
I showed my lad a clip from it that popped up on social media, but I'll watch the short over Xmas.
Stunning seeing the time lapse footage of it being shot.
Didn't know Another Round was on Netflix, have added it to my list as it's one that sounded interesting when the reviews first came out
I binged The Recruit over the weekend
https://www.netflix.com/gb/title/81396545?s=i&trkid=13747225&vlang=en&clip=81645256
Good fun, first episode a touch weak but gets better. “Gen Z in the CIA”.
Have we had 'Three Pines' on Amazon yet?
I've really enjoyed it thus far, asked for the books for crimbo.

Did no-one else watch/enjoy Wednesday? And not just the Cramps Goo Goo Muck dance scene.
Alchemy of Souls Part 2 is now 4 episodes in… I miss Mu-Deok but I’m definitely back in the zone for AoS… definitely hating the new episodes released Saturday/Sunday’s only…
Picked up on Stranger (I’m a Bae DooNa fan). Really enjoyed season 1, not sure I can get into season 2 though. Fighting corruption in the Prosecution Service (S. Korea).
watched the first episode & enjoyed it, will probably go back for more but tbh there's so much good telly now or other stuff I want to give a watch it's a fair way down the list! Currently ploughing my way through Deadwood actually which I missed first time round.Did no-one else watch/enjoy Wednesday?
Bit of a left-field one, but while searching for an Irish thing that a friend had recommended, I happened upon a documentary made by RTÉ (Irish state broadcaster) called The Funeral Director. Pretty sure it’s only about 45 or 50 minutes but it follows a funeral director from rural-ish Ireland and is a warts-and-all (but in a gentle way) insight into what he does and some of the people he does it for. There are a few beautiful moments and insights into death and bereavement. I found it utterly charming and for any Irish forumites, or those with Irish connections, I can thoroughly recommend it.
Has anyone watched Severance? Really something different and really out there. Very stylish. Leaves you guessing and thinking all the way through. Final 2 episodes were amazing and tense. Total cliff hanger ending so Season 2 hopefully. Didn't recognise any of the actors apart from Christopher Walken.
Tried an episode of Wednesday. Very pretty but felt formulaic, like Harry Potter with an Adam's Family skin on.
Best TV of the year for me was definitely “The White Lotus” 2nd series. Never seen anything like it before. Was brill.
Series One pretty similar 🤪. Both excellent.
Someone mentioned an opioid crisis doc in which case Dope Sick on Disney totally worth a mention. A brilliant docu-drama.
Has anyone watched Severance? Really something different and really out there.
I rate it as one of the very best shows of the last few years.
Didn’t recognise any of the actors apart from Christopher Walken.
As in, you didn't know who they were or their acting was so good, you didn't recognize them? Adam Scott in particular was a standout for me, I've only seen him in comedies so this was impressive. John Turturro did his usual excellent work and Dichen Lachman was unrecognizable from Altered Carbon - I knew I'd seen her before, but couldn't think where. Patricia Arquette also did a really great job.
Probably already mentioned....
"Against the Ice" is a great film, highly recommend.

Severance is utterly, utterly brilliant.
Watched 'The Recruit' Finale was an interesting twist. Recommended.
Been watching White Lotus, that is how you make a compelling tv show! Really hard not to just immediately start the next episode each time 😃 Arguably even better than S1.
I watched a riveting documentary on Netflix at the weekend - The Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari. It is about the tourists caught in the eruption on a volcanic island (White Island is the colonial name) off the east coast of the north island of New Zealand. Lots of compelling footage and really quite sad outcomes for some of the people.
Yeah watched the Volcano programme last night. Really interesting programme. Hard to imagine how horrific that must have been, the boat ride back across from the island must have been appalling.
Will check that out cheers Hels.

Yep thoroughly enjoyed it and hope they do a second series.
I saw the trailer for that the other day. It looks really good.
Have you watched ‘The Rescue’ about rescuing the Thai lads from the flooded caves? It’s absolutely incredible! It’s on Disney+ and on National Geographic (via Sky)
Also a fan of Severance. Had forgotten about it though.
Anyone who's watched White Lotus, have any of you also watched Nine Perfect Strangers with Nicole Kidman? I really enjoyed it... Are they sufficiently different from each other?
Also really enjoyed the Peripheral (there's a STW thread).
If you enjoyed Nine Perfect Strangers then White Lotus will be right up your strasse
Both series are excellent, though quite different.
As in, you didn’t know who they were or their acting was so good, you didn’t recognize them?
Ah apologies I actually thought it was a recent show as it wasn't on my radar at all and a friend shared it with me.
I didn't think I knew any of the other actors but now you say Patricia Arquette...of course!!! She was brilliant. I did watch altered carbon but don't remember it well at all apart from the main dude.
Glad to hear others thought it was great as the other half was so so about it but I absolutely loved it. So nice to watch something utterly different and the title sequence is just gorgeous.

Yeah. I recommended it a few pages back, it's absolutely gripping. 13 Lives, the Ron Howard semi-fictional account of the same thing is also good, though tbh it doesn't add much except allowing for dialogue and some dramatised diving sequences.

No argument - S2 was better 🙂
Finally got around to watching The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (Prime). Really fun movie. Nic Cage is back! Not that he ever went anywhere 😀 Pedro Pascal is great, too.
Also watched the first ep of S3 of Jack Ryan, which I had hopes for despite being underwhelmed by S2 (S1 was great IMO). Really poor, just one cliche after another (the bad guys have a nuke, what an original plot 😂) and the fish-out-of-water JR character from the first season has now fully morphed into a Jason Bourne-esque supersoldier so it could just be any generic, badly plotted action thriller really.
Dichen Lachman was unrecognizable from Altered Carbon – I knew I’d seen her before, but couldn’t think where.
I really remember her from Dollhouse and Last Resort.
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
Tried to watch that. Just found it really stupid and annoying. Abandoned after about 40 mins
The Glass Onion: A knives Out Mystery is on Netflix if you missed it in the cinema. 2 hours of fabulousness in total homage to the Peter Ustinov "Hercule Poirot" movies of the 70's.
We watched The Banshees of Inisherin, on Disney + this week. Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson acting together a la In Bruges. Great little film.
Just watched episodes 1 & 2 of The White Lotus. Currently living up to the hype.
We also watched The Swimmers during the week, on Netflix. A lovely real story.
I liked Knives Out: Glass Onion too.
The Witcher: Blood origin
A sweary, violent and funny precursor to the Witcher in just 4 episodes.
Really good first episode and I reckon I'll binge the rest today.
I’ve been watching Elite in Spanish (I think they dub it for English)as it’s absolutely bonkers and I like the accents.
It’s about some poor kids in a rich kid school but I’d say everything’s dialled up to 11 as opposed to the U.K./US fare, they do seem to like their drams.
Probably not you usual STW fare but although it’s well bonkers there’s some good little twists in it and you pick up some good Spanish stuff that isn’t in duolingo 🙂
Although I’m not sure I’ll ever be in the position to use such quality Spanish phrases of j offing in your mates bed !!!
Dichen Lachman was unrecognizable from Altered Carbon – I knew I’d seen her before, but couldn’t think where
She was in Animal kingdom if I remember correctly.
Really enjoyed Glass Onion.
Even better than the first movie IMO.
Loved his wardrobe, particularly this deckchair-inspired ensemble...

We watched Glass Onion last night and absolutely loved it. Very clever and funny. Trying to keep tabs on what’s a parody of what and who is a parody of who is all good fun
That's ^^^ probably why I didn't enjoy it that much, it felt like that kind of film, but if you don't know most of the references it's not so good. Interesting to see Philip Guston paintings on the wall, and another i'd forgotten, reminded me of my student days. Unbearable weight gave us a few more laughs. White Lotus - nobody mentioned the music! Starting to grate despite liking it 1st time I heard it.
Just finished The Traitors on iPlayer. I'm not particularly a reality show fan but thought this was really good. Always guessing as to how it's going to pan out.
Mrs FH was recommended Traitors, after a couple of episodes she said "You have to watch this" ,so I did catch up and we were hooked 😆 🤣
It's like a cross between The Aprentice and early Big Brothers.
I have been great at reading the room, I am a part time magician 😂
not got the superlatives to do White Lotus justice!! easily my favourite show ever
Traitors, not so keen. The bit at the round table was alright, and the little breakout gossip sessions - but too much filler on the whole. had zero interest in the tasks and all that nonsense. and didnt really enjoy the breakfast room 'reveal' format.
i will watch the knives out films and Pinocchio next...
Not Netflix but we’ve just watched Mayflies on iplayer
It is one of the most powerful pieces of television I’ve ever watched. It’s challenging stuff and if you make it through without it getting dusty in the room then you’ll be doing better than me.
another fan of The White Lotus here. altho just to go slightly against the grain, we preferred the 1st series (only slightly)
and on the back of that recommendation earlier for nine perfect strangers ^^^, didnt get past the first episode.
we’ve just watched Mayflies
Just watched the second half. Can't say anything more about it right now other than watch it.
Just watched The Stranger on netflix. Australian crime movie. Indie feel, quite surreal at points, brilliant use of sound. About an undercover cop and a suspected child murderer. Very enjoyable but it's not an easy watch. It's tense, dark and unsettling
Mrs FH was recommended Traitors, after a couple of episodes she said “You have to watch this” ,so I did catch up and we were hooked
I gave it a try after several recommendations.
It's clunky, flabby, Claudia is wooden AF and some of the contestants are annoying enough to appear on The Apprentice... but it's fiendishly addictive.
Watched four of them last night.

That's the thing, every episode I keep thinking "WhyTF am I watching this nonsense" then I click next. 😆 🤣 😂

I know, I didn't go to bed til almost 2am last night 😀
It's such a good format. I think it will run and run and they'll iron out some of the creases and tighten it up. Would work better as 40-45 min episodes rather than an hour IMO, and with a more engaging host.

You can get it down to 30-35 mins if you fast forward through the challenges.

Dollhouse.

Yep, the forward button was used during the sheep one for sure.
😀
We watched Pulp Fiction last night on Netflix and it has aged remarkably well. It was also amusing seeing the car cleaning scene with The Wolf who went on to do the Direct Line adverts.
I started watching Top Boy on Netflix which was mentioned previously. I’m 4 episodes in and I’m really enjoying it.
The Wolf who went on to do the Direct Line adverts.
I'm sure Harvey Keitel will be happy to know that's his legacy
I'm now watching the second series of Alice in Borderland.
It's very good
Binged Kaleidoscope over the last couple of days, enjoyable and hard to get head around Fring being someone else. No spolier, but I’m puzzled by the FBI agent in final/white episode.
Slow horses season 2 was ok, better than nothing, good to see a 3rd series coming.
A spy among friends on ITVX was great, old school spy series.
Then finally a spy thing on, we’ll I can’t remember what format it was on, about MI6. Main character was poor, spoilt what could’ve been a great series. Could tell it’d be rubbish as it was one of those shows where there’s irritating music at a too loud level all the way through.
Right, best get on with my Uni work now
Enjoyed Alice in Borderland - re-watched S1 too
Not Netflix but Disney - finally got round to watching 3 billboards outside Ebbing Missouri. Was expecting a sort of Erin Brockovic type film.....erm very much not that. Didn't realise it was the same guy as In Bruges. Epic swearing, ultra violence and very black humour. Very watchable load of nonsense that doesn't really tell you much. Banshees of Inisherin next I guess.....
Banshees of Inisherin next
Watched this on Disney the other night. Excellent film, very much back to the level of In Bruges (rather than Three Billboards).
Can I apologise for recommending Witcher Blood Origins.
I liked first episode but the rest went very downhill.
Anyone tried Kaleidoscope or White Noise on Netflix? Been recommended and casts look decent, so wondered
Enjoyed the last Dark Materials (iPlayer). Considering the last book reads like he wrote it pissed and the theme and setting gets pretty far out, it was a pretty good job all in all.
Thought that Witcher lite was Ok. Lenny Henry was awful mind. (Edit) As were the stick on ears.

I've always said this. Well, I thought he might have been on the wacky baccy, but the result is the same - it just sort of unraveled and didn't seem to have any real conclusion.
Yes they cut a load out and changed some bits and the result was something that converged a lot better, at least for TV anyway (imo)
Watched The Volcano: Rescue From Whakaari on Netflix last night, pretty grim but worth watching.
watched episode 1 last night of the netflix adaptation of Elena Ferrante's book 'The Lying Life of Adults'. We really really liked "My brilliant friend" which was Now I think, which also credited the enigmatic Ferrante (c) as one of the writers. Anyway, it looks great and I'm hooked, which is good as we'd about run out of compelling tv.
Can I apologise for recommending Witcher Blood Origins.
I liked first episode but the rest went very downhill.
How? How could it?? This makes me want to give it anther chance.
We made it nearly to the end of episode 1 - the wobbly walled studio scenes had a certain early doctor who papier mache charm and the acting was certainly, let's say committed. But blimey it was unwatchable garbage.
Slow horses season 2 was ok, better than nothing, good to see a 3rd series coming.
Binged S1 of this the other day, just started S2. It's fantastic, but I'll admit if it wasn't for Gary Oldman it'd go from a 9/10 to a 6/10, his character makes the show.
I got Apple TV free with the credit card. Currently powering through Slow Horses. Whole family enjoying it.
I got Apple TV free with the credit card.
Severance is utterly brilliant too. Maybe the best TV show of last year.
White Noise on Netflix?
Watched it earlier this week, had been looking forward to it as a fan of both DeLillo and Noah Baumbach.
I think it was brilliant - it was certainly immersive, aurally and aesthetically great, but a large chunk of it was puzzling (in the tone Baumbach uses, rather than what's happening) and left me wishing it had been less than 20+ years or so since I read the book. Definitely needs a second watch and I've been trying not to read too many reviews since watching it as there's a lot to think about. Closing credits sequence is a joy.
Aftersun is up on MUBI today - saw it at the cinema last night, really great. If you like any of Lynne Ramsay's films, there's a good chance you'll really like this.
White Noise on Netflix?
I've read the book, and I remember at the time thinking it was an incoherent mess, watched the first 20 mins of it on Netflix before muttering "This is an incoherent mess" and turning it off. At least it's faithful to the book?
Netflix as released a few documentaries; Misha and the Wolves is watchable, although you can see the point of the film coming a mile off, The Carlos Ghosn one is predictable, but the Bernie Madoff series is genuinely a fascinating insight into his scam.
Mystery Road, series 3 has started on BBC 4, first two were pretty good.
The Pale blue eye is worth a watch
I hope everyone is enjoying the wonderful Dance Monsters on Netflix? I worked on it 😁
Sadly didn’t get to meet Ashley Roberts in person, just drool from off stage
I hope everyone is enjoying the wonderful Dance Monsters on Netflix? I worked on it
😂🙌👍
My son loves it! Pretty sure he’s watched it all the way through.
I’ve watched a bit with him. Can you explain what the judges see on the stage when they’re watching the performers?
EDIT: I’ll ask him if he has any questions.
Just finished watching Clark. Surprisingly funny for a Swedish program about a bank robber and drug trafficker 😁 Six parts, and yes, I think it is supposed to be funny.
kilo
Mystery Road, series 3 has started on BBC 4
It's an "origins", prequal type thing. Thought the start was really good.
started Kaleidoscope on Netflix - supposed to be able to watch the eps in any order... I just let Netflix decide. Watched a couple. Tries to be gritty, has some silliness, but very watchable.
Definitely going to give White Noise and Aftersun a go when I get a chance.
In the early days of this thread, Deadlydarcy recommended Mystery Road which turned out to be fantastic. The prequel that started last night on BBC4 is equally excellent.

I remember recommending it now, yes. A bit of Aussie Noir. It was a cracking movie. I’d read people recommending Mystery Road on B4 - didn’t realise it was a prequel. So will catch that for sure. Cheers. 👍

Yes I was a bit worried about that in case it was just them flogging a cash cow as I am a big fan of the first two series but, only able to see the first episode, it was pretty much up to standard. Mystery Road is definitely not sponsored by the Australian tourist board!
If you like Aussie noire I can highly recommend the books of Gary Disher and Chris Hammer
Alchemy of Souls (Part 2) just finished today.
An everyday tale of soul shifters 🙃. In hanboks (obvs). Looks stunning pretty much all the time.
Enjoy it a lot, k-dramas quite often get ‘lost’ in the last couple of episodes (overly moralising, sometimes propaganda-ist) but this managed to tread the line pretty well (even though you know its going to have a happy ending despite it all).
Also; re-watched Thirty, nine about three (female) friends (aged, <spoiler alert>39</spoiler alert>) and what happens when one of them gets diagnosed with stage 4 cancer… very powerful, many tears.
