The Sandman.

I just kept wondering why I was watching it. Not my usual cup of tea. But I knew that from his hairstyle. A bit Doctor Who meets Harry Potter kinda with some dark edges and f-bombs. I'll watched a lot of DH but steer clear of HP. Binged Sandman just to see how it ended. Won't be watching next series. Don't get me wrong it wasn't all bad, there were a couple of standout episodes, just the overall theme not for me.

I think you need to be in a certain mindset (or of a certain demographic - there's very definitely a late 80s / early 90s goth vibe to it) to fully get into Gaiman's stuff. I can see how the mix of fairy tale whimsy and some serious themes could grate, but I love it. Four episodes in now and it's fast becoming one of my favourite TV things of the last few years.

Good to know. Guardian gave it 5* I think, so I was quite keen. Will still check it out, but more cautiously!
I've just finished S2 of The Boys and will get into S3 shortly. We've also found Spring Tide on STV player (free, you just need to know a Scottish postcode), which is more scandi noir stuff.

So I've watched a few Eps of the Sandman, and in the plus column; it's pretty close, they've done some ace work with casting, and some great actors are involved, and even the script isn't bad. In the minus column: oh God, the endless melodrama, the overly leaden and "portentous" musical score, the translation of materiel from the page to the screen...sometimes... just leave it alone, not everything needs to a telly programme or a film.

It's better than i thought it would be, at the same time has all the issues with all these sorts of treatments that i thought it would have.

Another +1 for Woodstock '99!

I'd just finished watching a film on Sat night and saw this pop up on the homescreen. Watched all 3 in one go.

I'll never complain about festival conditions again. How no-one was killed is a miracle.

And the crowd during Limp Bizkit!! 😳😳😱😱

I enjoyed the Woodstock film last night. I checked the line up: RATM and then Metallica were scheduled after limp bizkit, who I always thought were headliners

Given the state of things I spose they didn't play?

Plus, interestingly, Muse played on the 'emerging artists' stage and Jamiroquai played immediately before Kid rock

Good companion piece to this is 'Gimme Shelter' which also has an impending sense of doom

Also 'super hans' party' off of peep show 'ive seen the heart of darkness Jez...I've pulled open the Hurt locker and had a big ol' rummage round'

Warning: on Prime lurks Moonfall. Unless you want to go to bed in tears I'd avoid. A proper turkey. Should have trusted the reviews.

I disliked the first episode of The Sandman but took it it after that. I rate it as good rather than great.

Warning: on Prime lurks Moonfall. Unless you want to go to bed in tears I’d avoid. A proper turkey.

Dammit, now I'm intrigued and feel obligated to watch it to see how bad it can possibly be. Surely it can't be that bad after they spent so much money making it?

I've gone the other way. I quite liked the first few Sandman but I can't be arsed with it now. Tried to watch an Ep a couple of times now, and keep stopping. Bored.

Thirteen Lives on Prime is good, maybe just a touch long but I enjoyed it. I saw The Rescue a while back which is more of a straight documentary but I really enjoyed that too, I think it's on Disney+ if anyone's interested. I understand Netflix has got a series coming out shortly so the event's certainly being well covered!

And the crowd during Limp Bizkit

I know, and for such an utterly shite band!
I'm not sure how different from the Sky Doc this "series" was. It all seemed the same, just split into 3, apart from some extra stuff near the end (I don't remember the trucks being blown up).
Still pretty mind blowing second time around 😀

Enjoying Homecoming on Prime - a "what's going on?" drama that tonks along nicely with half-hour episodes.

(Tried two episodes of Sandman on the strength of a review in the Guardian. Should have trusted my own judgement from the first ten minutes of watching. It's just a bit shite. Like a BBC Sunday evening family show with marginally better CGI and more portentous acting.)

I just discovered Plex's library of free stuff to stream. Got the app on the Roku, watched The Harder They Come over the weekend. Excellent stuff, amazing soundtrack, goes well with pizza and a bottle of plonk

Same here. You just couldn't wait to see how awful it was going to get. Why the management team agreed to take part in the film, God only knows.

Caught up with Prey on Disney+ last night. Decent brain out stuff.

I've been watching From on Sky, 7 episodes in and I'm impressed. A bit of a horror mystery, people trapped in a town with monsters that come out at night. Worth a watch IMHO.

another vote for woodstock 99, just watched it over the last couple of nights, unbelievable. i cant believe it passed me by, i wasnt aware of it happening at the time at all unless my memory really is shot 😀

I’ll never complain about festival conditions again. How no-one was killed is a miracle.

i believe there were 3 deaths? (plus multiple sexual assaults, and yes, surprised there werent many more deaths)

It's taken me 10 episodes to realise Todd is Aaron Paul.

Probably is I now can't unhear Jesse Pinkman.

Obviously Sky/NowTV rather than Netflix but the new House of the Dragon last night (this morning really!) was very promising I thought. Basically more of the same (in fact the power struggles they're setting up seem almost too close to the original series if anything) so unlikely to convert anyone who didn't like Game of Thrones but great for existing fans! Apparently based on a shorter story (which I'm trying to avoid spoilers for) so hopefully they can wrap this up in 3-4 seasons before it collapses in on itself like the first one 😃

If anyone was a fan of Nathan For You (and if you haven't seen it, go find it now) he's back on UK tv this week with a new series, The Rehearsal, on Sky Comedy tomorrow night. I think the whole thing has already aired in the US and the reviews are great. Proper watch through your fingers hilarious cringe

I've watched through to episode 6, because the diner episode and the one where Morpheus walks with death were supposed to be outstanding. I got excited that ep. 6 was filmed around Richmond, and I recognised some of the places near where I sued to live, but other than that I'm still deeply underwhelmed. It's all a bit Christian - not sure whether it's meant to be or not? - and I agree that it feels like a Sunday evening BBC thing. I'm not sure that I'm interested enough to finish it if those were the best parts.

(SPOILER :

Winning a duel against Lucifer with 'hope' is about as basic 6th form Christian as it gets. And later, people die and all they need is a friendly, smiling face to lead them away from their bodies? Give me a break!)

Christ, I still remember the first time I saw that. Back in the early 90s, woke up with a smashing hangover after a massive binge and turned on the tv. WTF is this? Seems pretty mild now, but was shocking BITD.

Black Bird on Apple TV. Prison drama with a twist - if a convict can get a confession from another prisoner he’ll get set free. Based on a true story, superb performances from both of the leads. Cracking supporting cast. Last thing Ray Liotta did as well.

From is good, there are similarities to Lost but worth a watch.

Sandman, lasted 2 episodes before it turned 'Harry Potter'.

Taboo on BBC is excellent, don't know how I missed that originally.

Watching this at the moment, didn't have particularly high expectations - it's really quite good in a "remove your brain and enjoy the mindless violence" type way.

Has anyone mentioned "Love, Death, and Robots" on Netflix? Animated shorts on the themes in the title. Some are a bit meh, but some are pretty awesome.

Saw "Taboo" mentioned earlier. Excellent series and very compelling.

Dark is something I've watched the first series of, thought WTF and started again.

If you're into Liam Neeson smiting baddies, Cold Pursuit is what you want. Kind like John Wick but with lots of ice and snow and no distracting sub-plots to confuse things. Just Liam offing baddies, no distractions.

“I Came By” is worth a watch

Funny, I read a rave review of it. Said there were hidden depths to it, that only come out if you stick with it, or something. I found it bloody hard to stick with something with such wooden acting and a terribly "try-hard" script! Might have to give it another try.

Thumbs up from me for The Sandman. Mostly because i have the books and found the retelling to be really in keeping with the original tone. Mrs Blackflag found it a bit childlike, which i suppose it is, along with a lot of Neil Gaiman stuff it's very "Enid Blyton listening to Bauhaus"

Intrigued by Sandman, as I'm a big fan of Gaiman's darker stuff. I'm just worried it's going to be like Lucifer. Heavy-handedly soft, if you know what I mean?

If we're not limited to Netflix, The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey is excellent if you want to see Samuel L. Jackson doing the Prestige Drama thing playing an old man suffering from dementia who gets an experimental treatment that temporarily restores his memory.

A friend recommended Mr Inbetween (Disney plus)

We're really enjoying it. The central character is a crook/hit man who balances parenthood/dating/brother with MND with his violent nature and livlihood.

it's understated and darkly funny with great performances.

Nice little half hour episodes too.

A colleague is raving about Queen of the South. Best thing ever. Ozark on cocaine.

I watched episode one last night and was a bit disappointed - first by the fact that Mexicans in Mexico are all speaking English to eachother, but also the clumsy fast pace with many clichés.

Does it get better?
