[Closed] Neighbour's smoke alarm going off since 10pm last night - ideas....?

Our neighbours next door are away, their smoke alarm started going off last night at about 10pm.

We did the neighbourly thing and checked as much as we could from outside, eventually called non-emergency Fire Dept. number and they came round, looked through windows used IR camera etc and satisfied it's just an alarm an no actual fire.

This now leaves us in the lovely situation of having 2 mains powered smoke alarms going off constantly next door (terraced house) which is becoming a bit tiresome, didn't sleep well last night 🙁

Any ideas for legal solutions?

When they come back offer to have their house keys for them while they are away and shut curtains put lights on etc so you can always deactivate such an annoyance in future 😉

Ring them up and say the fire brigade and police are currently smashing down their doors as they believe a drugs farm in the attic may be on fire.

or as its a terace house some dont have a dividing wall in the atic, climb up then drop down into theirs , and pull the main fuses or start a small fire and then returnm to your house.

We have, bank holiday + noise source being inside = no action at the moment

I guess that you are going to have to smash their back door in then - you might find it enjoyable when the moment comes.

tried that 🙁
and none of the other neighbours have contact details either.

Hire a lock smith and give them the bill when they return

have thought about that but I doubt any locksmith would agree to do it would they if it's not my house?

Id be surprised if they didnt have someone on call, and it being inside is irrelevant as they can get a warrant to break in and charge costs of locksmith and electrician to homeowners. My mrs is an environmental health officer and this is what she does on a daily basis.

If your LA dosent have out of hours service then not much you can do (legally)

Is the leccy meter box outside?

Might be something to be done in there...*

Possibly from the rotting meat in the freezer you've just turned off.

I'd be calling the police, tell them you're going to break in, find the smallest window you'd get in and break it. Least cost to fix.

I feel your pain, our neighbours house alarm was going off every 20 mins for about 14 hours once and it was physically 'painful' if you stood in the street

Can you google their name to see if you can find any web presence? I found someone on an internet forum like this and was able to track them down via a PM feature

Do you know where they work? If so maybe try and contact their place of work in case they have a mobile number for them (although I guess this will be a difficult discussion, so you may have to explain the situation and ask the workplace to contact the owners to give them your phone number so there is no breach of confidentiality)

Do you know where they have gone on holiday and when they are back? If camping can you contact some of the sites in the area, if it is a package holiday Travel Agents used to be prepared to send someone a message via the tour rep, but I think the law has changed now (even for a dead relative)

If none of the above I think pushing much harder on the EHO or the non emergency police number.

Good luck

Make a 999 call regarding the property to the Police - they will break in and probably switch off the alarm.

Fill the whole house with expanding foam through the letterbox. Should deaden the sound nicely.

Break in, smash it then leave a protest poo in the toilet.

Our alarm went off at night a few weeks ago. Shat my pants. Pulled it off the ceiling but it already woke the kids up. Still not put it back yet :-/

You won't actually commit a major criminal offence if you gain entry and disable the alarm.

It's not Burglary - no element of intent to steal / cause GBH / commit criminal damage etc

It would initially be criminal damage, but you would have a statutory defence as you believe you would have consent if your neighbour knew of the circumstances of the damage.

It is being 'found on enclosed premesis' but same defence as above.

In your shoes, I'd call your local Police force and tell them of your intentions - you could even invite them to attend and witness the scenario. Then enter the house causing as little damage as possible, disable the alarms and leave. Film the whole thing in case any allegations are made. Secure the property afterwards, then look forward to a rather awkward conversation with your neighbour on thier return.

*NB - this all assumes cordial relations with neighbours. They might be a bit miffed if a fire starts and the house burns down because you turned the alarms off...

Yup. Waste an emergency services time by doing just that.

True. It was in our room and we've got one in every room and all the hallways, but yes should get a new battery for it.
