[Closed] National Service. Which countries still have it?

The term National Service is still used to describe compulsory military service programs in countries including Austria, Mexico, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Israel, Malaysia, the Republic of China (Taiwan), Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey. India has a separate program called NSS (National Service Scheme) in which students from primary level to graduate level participate.

I believe Sweden still has it to an extent?

germany's national service is effectivly optional... you can opt to do civil service; wiping old peoples bums, taking them meals, working at a youth hostel, sitting/looking after sevrely disabled people.

Lithuania as far as I know. It is required to do national service at age of 18, unless you get into higher education (works very well as kids try harder at school).

Now 2nd question what country still has national service for women!!!??? israel!??? Bring it back I say might sort out our knackered crime rates amongst the young.

There are many variations within different countries from what I can recall.
I think you continued with the service until about 50 in Sweeden, meaning MD's and CEO's of companies had to go camping for 2 weeks of every year and learn how to run again & dress as trees.
It'd not do our society any harm me thinks, but it's not something we have grown up with. Maybe our fathers and Grandfathers did, and they all had stories of adventure especially in warmer climbs (before the days of Easy Jet et al).

YAY! Turn them into war criminals instead - a result! They may have to shoot up a lot of funny looking people but they deserve it for being foreign 🙂

Why ? If it's compulsory, then whether it allows you to vote or not, is completely irrelevant.

Apart from Israel, Taiwan and South Korea (all in or near a state of war almost continuously), are you spotting any serious fighting nations on that list? It doesn't produce useable peacetime armies, although it may have other social benefits.

Denmark have cut it down to 4 months of basic training, learning how to polish your boots and iron your shirts. Then after the 4 months they ask them all "who wants to go to war" and whoever say ME ME ME ME then get to sign a contract where they promise to go shoot people wherever they are told. Then spend a some extra time learning a few extra trick on top of the polishing and ironing.
