I remember watching it on Channel 4 about 16-17 years ago as part of their "Banned" season.
it wasn't a machine - it a combination of a sensory deprivation chamber and some powerful drugs.
the simpsons did an excellent version of it when homer ate some guatemalan insanity chillis to keep his titls as the town's hot chilli eating king
