I know we don't need telling, but here's a tragic example of what happens when idiots get behind the wheel of a car. Heart breaking stuff and I commend Durham Police and the families involved for making this video.
We recently changed our car and now if you accidentally 🤔exceed the speed limit you get a wagging finger in the form of beeping which apparently you can't turn off 🙄

It'll be in most cars made since 2024. There's normally 3 ways to turn it off in those vehicles; via the infotainment system, some kind of shortcut button, or by not driving like a ****.

MrsLawman's 24-plate Aygo is much like this; there's an apparent setting in the volume controls to turn 'Warning beeps' or whatever it's called down/off - but it doesn't seem to work on the excessive speed beeps. Which continues to beep every few seconds. And once for every time the car detects a change of speed limit.
I've noticed many single point gatso style cameras on rural roads are being replaced by average speed cameras which seems a much better idea. It is a pity the actual cameras are massive bright yellow things though - why not have nice green ones that can blend in, especially as there can be several.
The bottom line though is that driving these days is almost impossible. On a typical 100 mile drive you could easily have the speed limit change 70 times between 20,30,40,50,60 and 70. This takes up a huge amount of your concentration - I seem to be constantly looking at my speedo or signs or the GPS speedo on google maps rather than the road - well obviously you kind of do both at the same time but it does divide your attention. Couple that with large complicated screens in cars lacking physical buttons to do simple things like climate control or audio and its just not safe. I don't have an answer mind you but surely speed limits could be rationalised so they don't change so often, even if that means we have slower speed limits for longer in built up areas.

These do exist, the cameras on the... A57? I think, are dark green and so are really hard to spot when they're totally not deliberately at all overgrown by trees.

No arguments here. But we've discussed this before. As much as I love technology, touchscreens as a primary interface in a car is a blitheringly stupid idea that needs to die.

Exactly what's needed. But look at the backlash where 20/30 zones have been rationalised... Wales being only one example.
I'd be all for 20/40/60 zones (plus 80 option for variable speed motorways) and nothing else. Would need more "approaching a speed limit" signage on entering built up areas... but arguably that would help everyone get entering zones right anyway.

A bit of a smart alec answer not worthy of you. Clearly you look at the road sign first but don't tell me that when limits change every few hundred meters like on the North Circular for instance you continually know at all times exactly which zone you're in, especially when also concentrating on all the other many hazards - its very easy to miss a sign. I quite often drive a long wheelbase van with a long trailer for work and keeping an eye on the rig on roundabouts and changing lanes whilst monitoring traffic and road signs whilst disagreeing agreeably with Rest is Politics on the stereo can be very tiring!
It is very easy to miss one sign, I agree. But there's never just one sign if it deviates from the norm, there should be repeaters every 200 yards (though this is council-dependent). No repeaters on a densely lit road = 30; no repeaters on an unlit road = NSL.
I was being flippant for comedic effect of course, but you're not painting a great picture here.
(I can't comment on the North Circular, I haven't driven anywhere near there in at least a decade and am in no hurry to change that whilst trains exist.)

God forbid that the ballache of obeying road rules creates a demand for better public transport!
but you're not painting a great picture here.
My picture is that I drive around 20k a year in a mixture of vehicles all over the country, quite often on unfamiliar roads and since I passed my test (second time) in 1987 I've never had so much as a parking ticket, let alone a speed awareness course or points. I've also never had a bump or worse.
However this record is becoming harder to maintain and its not because my skills are diminishing. I'd rather be looking out for other road users and myself - if this means speeds get universally lower then fine, no argument but the mess our road systenm is in at the moment does nobody any favours.
