back in june we got our new springer, Arley. at 8 weeks he was all i hoped he would be. now at nearly 6 months i have noticed he is often quite lame on his back right leg, not i hasten to add because of over exercise? been very careful on that. took to vet today to check his balls were down enough to come off (i know oouch) it looks as if he may have hip dipsplacia (spelling sorry) got to say i am gutted this time next year was hoping he would come out with me. going for x-ray next week to be sure. anyone any experience on this? can it be cured?
down in the dumps now!!
It varies upon each dogs-best wait for the results and see what your vet diagnoses.
Hope it's alright.
Never chopped my dog and he was fine.
Do his parents have hip dysplasia? Have they been hip scored?
there is no history in either blood line, have to say the vet did say worst case hip dysplsia?? best case muscle or tendon type injury. will no more after x-ray on tuesday! could be a real bad day for him, dickie hip and no nuts!! fingers crossed.
I always thought hip dysplasia came on in later life for most dogs? We had a couple of labs (renowned for having dodgy hips) and they were fine until much later in life. I'm sure he'll be fine and it's just muscular. Fingers crossed.
"Hip Dysplasia" as such simply refers to an inherited instabilty in the joint because of a ligament weakness. There are varying degrees and most are manageable with conservative treatment. The really important things being controlled excercise to build the muscles up and being Really careful about his weight. Even really bad cases can be effectively managed with surgery (especially if insured/money isn't a problem!). If that's what he's got, it not necessarily a big problem.
May not be that though - may just be a "sprain". Xrays don't always give you the answer but they're a logical next step. I'm sure your vet will go through it all with you at the time.

Good for you - you were lucky then 🙂

Hip dysplasia is something they're born with. It's just that a lot of dogs don't suffer any actual symptoms until later in life (secondary arthritis etc)
