sorry for another guitar related thread, i have played a few but i'll be doing a load more playing 2moro.....
have wittled my list down to the following, what do people think of them any good/bad experiences?
1st decision i need to make is between a dreadnought and a concert/auditorium size, i love the sound of the dreadnought, but i also really like the feel low action and size of the audorium size, i have small hands and find the shallow neck of the auditoriums really nice, almost as easy as an electric.
I love Nick drake and finger picking (although it is something i am getting better at! so the auditorium is supposedly good for that), but i also like strumming and a full sound, annoyingly my repertoir is probably half and half, nick drake, paul weller, radiohead, neil young, ray lamontagne, that kind of stuff no pwer chords here thank you.
I am not into plugging it in (well not so far) and i wont be performing or recording.
make wise its down to either Martin (taylor is too bright) as the pricey option, or guild, as the cheaper option.
I am thinking of full solid mahogany (definitely back and sides, might try a spruce top)
1) martin D15 mahogony solid top back and sides (well sapelle) minimalist design, dreadnought style
£900 new £650 ish used
2) martin 00015 again mahogany (sapelle) but auditorium style, £900, £650 used
and then the guild exquivalents
1) guild gad 25 mahogany dreadnought solid body, £499 new used £350
2) guild gad m 20 auditorium solid body same price as above.
the guilds have a bit of dogy rep for build quality though
your thoughts?
anyone got any of the above?
Never really liked Martin. Don't know why just haven't.
As for shape, I'd go for BIG ASS Auditorium purely because I think the sound is much more powerful.
Oos probly my terminology, i thought the auditorium was the smaller thinner almost like a parlour guitar shape?
Thats what i mean anyway
Auditorium and OOO's are the same, me thinks. Your'e right, I'm thinking of Jumbo but I still stand by my judgement, OOO or Auditorium sound a hell of a lot better and louder depending on the wood.
Also, dreadnoughts are used commonly for more strumming with some picking whereas the Triple O and Jumbo are for more plucking with some picking, generally.
Also, don't go for makes. Ask the guy's, (or gal's) at the shop to bring you X guitars between £X and £X and then sit there and play with your eyes closed. I did that for my classical and I got an incredibly nice solid Top, Back and Sides Admira, (hand made in Spain) for £200. And it just keeps improving it's sound.
I've owned both and all I would say is that the Martin just gets better the longer you keep it. If you buy a Guild or Taylor, for example, it will sound good but it won't get better but Martins just sound sweeter the longer you keep them.
