So how is this meant to work? 3:20pm on the final day – do they add another day or are England just going to bat a bit then it finishes in an inevitable draw? If that's the case, then what is the point of them even playing?

It's farcical, isn't it?!
I mean, yes, the weather has been bad but much of it was lost to bad light - pink ball and floodlights and there was no crown so why not start earlier. What's the point of them playing now, fair enough if there was a crowd there. Hopefully, no one gets injured in this pointless hour or so.

Genuinely surprised they didn’t stop for tea at 4pm

I did wonder earlier if they might concoct a county style declaration game - this is an entertainment business after all.

eg: England declare, bowl filth at the P openers for 5 overs to let them get to an agreed total (say 250 lead) and then declare and England agree to chase until at least 5 down and then it becomes a proper game again.

Weather screwed it anyway.

Quite a few folk on Twitter pointing out that if there had been spectators - and thus a requirement to refund people for Days 3 and 4 - there would have been rather more effort to actually make a match of it, rather than hanging about going "ooh, looks a bit grey over there". TMS have been absolutely raging about it, and fair play to them

Weather has been grand pretty much the whole time up north - thought the south coast was meant to have the best weather!

Morning, everybody.

Blowing a gale up at the Northern edge of the county, with earlier torrential rain. Still heavy cloud cover.

If they get on this morning, it's going to be interesting!

Burns not only has an average of 5 he’s also dropped some sitters too.
Questions to be asked at the top of the order again. Crawley to open and Denley back at 3? Or Bracey? Or even Bairstow?

International meets village currently - Joss keeps whacking it out of the park and the fielders have to then go and find it. Only missing a field of corn and some nettles for the ball to go in.

Or as a team mate once said when I had one of my occasional days off from behind the stumps on a sunday to bowl some cunning no spinning off-spin...

"Are you coming on soon Jon?

"Why?

"I was going to tell the mice in the field to get their tin hats on

I stand corrected!

Highest scoring innings though, I think.

Either way, a top knock!

I suspect he’ll end up opening and Pope will be the number 3.
Either way, he’ll be here for a while.

That was some innings from Crawley. His timing, all around the wicket, was exquisite.

Amazing machines.

<Political rant on a non-political thread bore>

But combining a Spitfire with the NHS is in pretty poor taste.

</political rant on a non-political thread bore>

I won't do it again.

I'm looking forward to watching the highlights tonight. It sounds like Crawley has played a truly great Test innings. Especially as ****stan started out trying to reel him in with wide bowling, hoping he'd be nervous about trying to get to 200. Sounds very much like his game/series awareness led him to think "You've got to win this game lads, so it is your own time you're wasting here" and he didn't rise to it. When you're starting to dictate tactics to the fielding side you have them on the ropes. Then you grind them into the dirt, tire their bowlers, keep them in the field.

One of the defining characteristics of Stokes' knock at Headingley was that it was the only the first or second time the aussie bowlers had to really put their shoulder to the wheel. The last day (which I was lucky enough to be there for) started out with the bowlers fresh, but they flagged quickly having been made to work the day before.

I think Root is probably trying to piss them off. England are 1-0 up and don't really have to win this game and/or run any risks trying to do it.

I disagree with sending the bowlers in now, though. If I was Naseem or Shaheen Shah I would bounce the shit out of Broad to prompt the declaration if Root could be made to worry about possible injuries to the bowlers.

It's an odd thing to say about a batsman who has just scored 152 but that was slightly concerning innings from Buttler, one of the most destructive batsman in the history of the game. Once it was obvious England were going to get past 500 he didn't seem able to become destructive and ended with a bit of a lame dribble of runs for the last 100 deliveries faced.

Excellent last 90 minutes there, ****stan trying to hang on for the close, and Anderson Archers and Broad pinging the ball round

Interesting suggestion from Warne, keep Jimmy for home tests and use him as a bowling coach on tour. Not sure if Jimmy would go along with that mind!

England management have had enough of these drops and Collingwood is now in the field. No messing around.
