OK, so we're all familiar with these docking stations for the ipod.

Would I be right in thinking that they also work for iphones?
Would I also be correct in thinking that they would work with other phones like Samsung etc?

Yes in general they work with the iPhone, not seen one that doesn't.

As the dock has an iphone/ipod connector you can't plug any other phone in to this. If an auxiliary line is available you could you use that with a monster cable type thing.

I am pefectly happy with lack of geekyness, I'm also impressed that you can tell it is working from a still picture, extra nerdy points for you.

Not all are generically compatible with both due to the size/shape of the device although many come with different shaped plastic inserts to sort this.

its also worth noting that some older model docks won't charge newer ipods/iphones. Essentially, apple has 2 pins on the connector for charging over firewire, which is cheap and easy for dock manufacturers to do. They (in their infinate wisdom) decided to stop supporting this pin (despite it still being present) in around 2008 (not sure of the exact date).

get something with this logo on to be sure

other phones won't work very well, they won't sit in the stand, nor will they charge, nor will the controls be controllable via the dock. if you're lucky you might be able to transmit audio over a line-in cable but its not guarenteed

I found it quite difficult to find one to charge an iPhone 4 for a good price. eventually settled on a logitech one, with a rechargable battery that lasts for 10 hours. Its very good indeed.
