The little bubs' have got some biro on one of the holiday home faux leather dining room chairs (blue ink on a cream seat). Using various methods I have toned down the marks and they are now purple rather than blue. Any tips on how to get the remaining stain off? We have tried nail polish remover, pen eraser (popular over here for some reason) and milk.

Have you tried a kitchen surface cleaner? Always amazes me what they manage to clean off - you can get them with bleach in as well.

Might be worth trying on a small patch first.

Stain Devils used to sell diethylene glycol as "Ball Point Pen Stain Remover".
Not sure about the current range though, or if you can buy it elsewhere.

Blue ink is probably methylene blue.
Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) will remove the stain.

You should be able to get this powder from a pharmacy.

Is that not what they used to put in car antifreeze and Austrian wine? Be careful about trying coolant from your car, most of it is OAT now (organic acid technology) and that doesn't sound good! Something alcohol-based might be worth a try though.

Thanks for all of the tips. We are in France and so accessing potentially harmful chemicals shouldn't be a problem.

Sounds like lemon juice would be worth a go...

WD40. At least it'll smell nice if nothing else.

As long as you can find a shop open long enough to buy them I guess.

Shirley, someone who can afford a holiday home (which you took the effort to tell us) would just have a man bring another dinning set around 😉

Do a test patch somewhere less noticeable, I tried once to remove biro from a brown faux/cheapish leather sofa and managed to remove the brown colour out the leather

Holiday home is just what the kids call our rented gite, I forgot I have to justify every comment on this forum (very, very nice gite though) 😉

Lemon juice and white vinegar have not worked, will try toothpaste and then WD40 next.

Can you get Magic Erasers over there? I've got one and it's witchcraft, it's pulled decades-old stains out of my crappy laminate worktop.

If all the above fails or is not a available then try those nail varnish remover pads.

They worked on my leather at home with pen marks, but I did have to go over the whole area as it left a nice clean muck free spot 😉
