Can anyone recommend one?
My lad is very much into his films and has picked up a few that are Region 1, so now he wants a compatible player.
I don't recognise a lot of the brands that Google is throwing at me.
All of the dvd players at Ritchersounds used to multiregional - I'd assume they still are.... We have had a Sony for 15+ years now....
Yep, the cheap ones tend to be very hackable with certain key code and the like entered. Just Google the model you are thinking of to check. Many are multiregion out of the box of course.
I bought a few over the years from Asda and they could all be unlocked.
I'd forgotten region coding was even a thing. All the dvd players I ever had were unlockable fairly easily.
I forgot region coding was a thing as my old Arcam DVD player was region free. I remembered when the Sony blue-ray player refused to play some old DVDs. Stumped me for a while until I realised that it was the region lock. Back in the day it used to be cheaper to get imports of US or Aussie DVDs than UK ones. Anyone remember CD-Wow and Play?
So that made me have to go and torrent them, as the DVDs weren't available on streaming services at the time.
Somewhat ironic.
Back in the 20th Century when physical media was still a thing, pretty much all UK players could be trivially unlocked.

Yeah - pretty sure you can unlock them all with a trivial amount of effort - just google your model number - all but the high end ones probably run on one of only a few operating systems anyway.
Failing that, if you own the physical DVD, there are few moral/ethical arguments remaining to then just downloading the movie in whatever format that you want it in. Just use a vpn.

Looks like my lad's player needs a a special remote and and lot of faff. LG do a multi region once for £65. Will go with that.
