just imported some mpg files from a video camera, but windows media player is only playing the audio, not sure why the images aren't showing?
Read somewhere that i may have to convert the files to avi's? if so whats the best free conversion software?
Chances are it's a codec issue.
Try downloading the free DivX codec from DivX.com (install everything bar the player, you don't need it).
Alternatively, try using VLC rather than Media Player.
If neither of those work, there's a utility called "g-spot" (which is fun to google). G-spot will analyse the file and tell you what codecs you need.
