Took car for first MOT yesterday. Car passed ok but driving away from MOT centre noticed that the ESP warning light had come on and I couldn't switch ESP back on.
I've a suspicion that it's been damaged due to hard brake test on MOT. Anyone else had anything like this?
We're not psychic, what's an ESP light?

And how exactly would hard braking damage the ESP...?
Most garages that do MOT's do so with the use of a rolling road, the car doesn't move anywhere.
thejesmonddingo - subtle comedy genius!
Offroading ESP for VW (and probably every other car) uses ABS pump and brakes to control individual wheel speeds and correct slides (as I understand it).
New bulb required.
Its not uncommon for cars coming off rolling roads to throw up ABS/ESP warning lights. If all 4 wheels have speed sensors and only 2 are spun up to xxMPH the system gets confused.
Usually a quick blast will reset it, if not garage should be able to turn it off via ECU diagnostics port.
Guess it could be something similar due to brake test
TY 🙂

VW today confirmed that ABS pump has died - apparently common on VAG group cars made in 2006. Would be a £1600 job - thankfully car is 2 days inside 3 year warranty so it's being done under warranty.
Wondering if there's a link to MOT or coincidence
Nice.

Ditto, thank god for warranty!
(My Abs/traction control warning lights came on after Mot but reset themselves) usually after a jolt on the rollers.
Rich , my seat ibizas last mot failed on a few things. one of them being the abs light on. I told them its never been on in something like 185k and i asked why it would be on now.they were unhelpful and i drive off.i drove back to the station after a mile or so as the brakes dragged so badly. i asked them to free them off as it didnt come in like that. they said they didnt fix or repair cars and i had to drive it home.
with everything starting to get so rusty it went on and on. abs sensora, drums,shoes,....still the abs light would come on.. then they found the flat connection pins in the abs unit very corroded and they reconed the fault was from that end.a new pump was approx 500 quid.i asked if they would fit a 2nd hand one after sourcing one for 165ish.. but they didnt.so i had to drive it down to another garage.the bill went upto about 980.
On top of that the 2nd garage called me to ask if i had the keys to the car after dropping it off. They recon they couldnt remember getting the keys from me.I didnt have them in any of my pockets,in the other car and it was nowhere at home.never to be seen again! total nightmare and no fob to lock the car anymore.they didnt even split the diffrence of the new key cost.. which took another week+.
I recon it was the abnormal braking forces of the MOT test that finished off my brakes.
Ive also left with handbrakes coming up a lot higher than when they went in.
Other pain in the ass stuff - getting a powersteering pump fitted recently left me finding out the next day that the side skirt and wheel arch was popped off as they caught them on the ramp... but didnt tell me about it.
Another time was getting tyres fitted by the sleepy monkeys that get jobs fitting tyres.i watched one guy slap the handle of the jack into my door. i took note of the point where the handle hit it,rubbed the area before i left and shook my head.It wasnt too bad but a dent was there.
MOre recently i had valves fitted to the rear of my car and they young loon went and fitted them all round to one car.. and it ended up with the guy telling me that the hub was stripped.i told him it came in with all fixing bolts fully tightened as i check them quite often/had the wheels off for other work not so long ago.. and he suggested i drove to the nearest dealer to get 2 new bolts. I told him to go around and get them for me.it got a bit heated and the manager got a guy to buy a bolt (they reconed one bolt wasnt too bad after all - but i found out that it was also thrashed at a later stage)
Ive also had engine bay plastics cracked after timing belt replacements etc.ive found cable ties holding things back together. I returned to the garage after that one and showed them and told them how effing (used the f word) rough the mechanic was.
the same garage recently had the whole front bumper off to replace my radiator.marks in the removable covers on the front of the bumper looked like they had been hacked with a carpet tack tool.both sides of the bumper no longer align.the fixings for the inner wheel arch linings have about 4 fixings missing and things rattle around now.
and breathe.
think you'd best change the garage you use, or your ibiza.
