My desire to "move north" (well, north-er than London) is undiminished.

Have seen a job in Lichfield: where would the STW massive suggest living if you worked there if you wanted a decent biking life? Thanks, as always, for any intel...

erm - Lichfield is pretty nice! Easy drive or even ride to Cannock Chase which is a great big MTB playground.

Sorry, I wasn't suggesting Lichfield wasn't nice 🙂

Just wondering if there was an obvious option "nearby" that I wouldn't necessarily know about...

Cheers for replying anyway

Lichfield is a pretty decent city and probably the best of the local cities and towns. If you want more rural then there's some nice villages. Altenative might brum suburb like Sutton Coldfield. Depends what you want really.

Lichfield is really nice

1. close to the Cannock Chase, great trails on your doorstep
2. Good Pubs (real pubs)
3. Great places to eat
4. the best kebab shop ever!!!!

Rugeley! You can ride straight to the trail centre from the Etching Hill side! I used to live on Joseph Dix drive as a boy - I invented mountain biking in the summer of 1976 on my Raleigh Chopper - beat the Marin County clunkers to it but I didn't publicise it like Fisher et al...

I'd stay in Lichfield and commute as little as possible. As said, it is a nice town with lots of other attractions close by. The one place you'll have to go to very often is your work so why not be as close as possible.
It is one of the more expensive areas though so you could save a bit by looking at neighbouring towns.

Lichfields ok bit overpriced to buy but renting is a good option. It is a very small city very little in shopping unless your into specs and charity shops no decent bike shop.Surrounded by open!countryside with good links everywhere.
No real dodgy areas apart from the Dimbles which is not that bad as police are clamping down on anti social activitys after the recent murder
As above the Chase is within 20 mins riding and there are a fair few riders from Lichfield that ride Tuesday,Thursday night.

Rich an outsider to Lichfield!

You should get a job at the tourist office Rich. 🙂
Born & bred Lichfield. Moved away but then moved back. Nice, compact City, tons of history I could bore you with. Stiff shops, Opticians & Sandwich Shops. Housing wise Southern side is very expensive, rest is about on par with most other towns. Decent rental market also. Some folk commuting to London from Lichfield, as its 80mins on the WCML.
You'd probably find it claustrophobic compared with London. Some nice parts of B'ham an easy commute away.
Who's the job with then ?

Hey thanks for these additional responses. Job is at a school (teacher here) and it looks OK so that's good.

I'm from Birmingham anyway so that is also a known quantity option, never got as far north as Lichfield in my 18 years there though...

Haywood is nice, my mate lives up there. Easy drive to Lichfield with the Rugeley by-pass, good few pubs and can be on the Chase within 3-4minutes! You also have a choice of Rugeley, Lichfield and Stafford when you need to get into town.
