I've got a LG Flatron E2750 27" monitor. Fairly random choice but works for me. I don't do gaming or design though.

Then just go to your local Computer Orbit (or wherever) and get the one you most like the look/price of.

I bought an iiyama as my previous company were buying them outside the usual procurement deals (ie. chosen by someone who knew what they were doing!)
This one http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/monitors/amdfreesync/b2783qsu-b1.html
It's v good.

Iiyama were always the best back in the CRT days, for "normal" monitors at any rate. I'd no idea they were still going!

Ive got an earlier modle of the liyama prolite 27".
Standard 1080 screen, it been great, simmilar to this:

Cant fault it, cheaper and the lower resolution migh be beneficial with your aging eyes, and to be honest 1080 is fine on a 27" screen.

if you've the space, two 24" monitor are nice but if not go for a 27" over the 24 any day of the week. Very impressed with mine (was a gaming spec one though)

Acer G236HL (2012 year apparently, bought 2013 for £130) on the left

Iiyama ProLite E2273HDS on the right. I think I paid £60 for it as ex demo w/o a stand in 2013. About £150 RRP at the time.

Asus and Samsung have both served me well

Get the largest you can and increase font size - same issue as you with 53 yo eyes
