Had two phones with Orange on pay monthly since December 2011 - 2 year contract - at what point this year are they likely to offer a new phone in return for extending contract?

I think it's a month before the contract ends, so November this year

Im with 3 on a 2 year contract and can upgrade after 18 months ...

Usually can upgrade 3 months before contract ends on a 2 year contract. However, contract date always remains at date taken out. So if you upgrade early new contract period would be 2years 3 months.
