Stolen from LinkedIn, I thought you guys might like a crack at this.

Physics nerds!

Freddie Mercury once sang: “Two hundred degrees, that's why they call me Mister Fahrenheit, I'm travelling at the speed of light”

But if Freddie had indeed achieved the impossible goal of travelling at such speed, what would be his temperature? (Feel free to use Centigrade/Celsius and please show your working)

Speed of light in a vacuum is 300 000 000 m/s, if he was in a vacuum he'd be pretty cold

Exactly. 4 champions of the world agreed on the wording so who are we lowely also rans to disagree.

champion doesn’t mean ‘winner’ in the context of the song. Why continue ‘fighting to the end’ if you’ve already won?

champion means the person chosen to complete or fight on your behalf - on behalf of the whole world in this instance. (Suggesting there’s something the whole world could agree on once 🙂 )

A vacuum has no temperature.  His temperature would depend on if he is radiating more heat than he is generating internally.  NO conduction or convection to get rid of heat and not much radiation at 37 C so he would probably over heat

Zero kelvin due to his infinite mass

Surely infinite Kelvin due to the infinite mass / energy requirements?

If you think about it, they did also have a valid scientific theory that the rotation of planet Earth was in fact caused by sizably-posteriored members of the female population...

Fat bottomed girls, you make the rockin' world go 'round

More scientific theories in rock songs required.

It depends on several things, not least the medium he's travelling in. But, we already know how hot he is, 200F = 366.483K (semi-interesting fact, note how the K is upper case because the unit Kelvin was named after a person. As indeed was W = Watt, N = Newton, J = Joules, but not m = metre or kg = kilogram)

So I think the salient calculation is that if we can use his temperature to estimate his energy, we should then be able to calculate how massive he is / was.

But we already know that, from the evidence of Live Aid and other similar data, in his day he/Queen were ****ing massive.

QED

A perfect vacuum would be 0Kelvin...bloody fuvking freezing.

Space is supposed to be about -250°C I think.

Again...bloody cold Freddie's Mercury would have dropped pretty low imo

not to get into a pedantic argument 😉 but a vacuum can have no temperature as you need matter to have a temperature.  But space is not a perfect vacuum

He does say that he's "burning through the sky" though - does that not imply an atmosphere?

You can derive a temperature from the radiation passing through space even if there is no other stuff there.  So I am told.

True but my understanding is a perfect vacuum doesn't exist and zero Kelvin is the absence of temp where partices have no Kinetic Energy

Misheard song lyrics? Shirley it’s “burning through this guy”, a reference to his getting bored with May and his badger antics.

Things in a vacuum can have a more-than-absolute freezing temperature, though, right? See, for example, spaceships and planets.

I don't it is you know. I just listened.

Theres no hint of that in the lyrics. Its describes working hard and succeeding and suggest anyone who has paid their dues is a champion.

A true vacuum is a space with the total absence of matter. Something in a vacuum is by definition, not in a vacuum.

(semi-interesting fact, note how the K is upper case because the unit Kelvin was named after a person. As indeed was W = Watt, N = Newton, J = Joules, but not m = metre or kg = kilogram)

And in SI orders of magnitude, capitals typically denote an increase and lowercase a decrease.  So Mega is M and milli is m.  Stuff with Greek letters like using mu for micro still follow this convention.

Kilo is an outlier here in that is _should_ be K if it were to follow convention, but K is already taken so it's the otherwise unused k instead.  Eg, 1 kilokelvin would be 1kK.  I can only assume that milli and metre share an m because we need four m's, we've already used the lowercase Greek m and the uppercase one looks identical to the Latin one.
