More likely than not, moving there or thereabouts, in the next two to three weeks.

I'm sure I asked this weeks ago but can't find the thread.

1) Where would you rent a house/flat?
2) Where would you not rent a a house/flat?

Alternatively any landlords or people with spare room? Need lodgings from the end of May to December (possibly longer, unlikely to be shorter).

Rent to the West or South somewhere and commute

Yarm is a nice small town

I was a student up there, would personally avoid Middlesborough itself and head over to Guisborough, 20 minutes from the 'boro but 5 minutes from a good network of trails, regular Tuesday and Thursday night group rides all year round too.

Pretty much what uplink said. Very good mtb scene and riding in Guisborough but not as nice a town as Yarm, though pleasant enough. Nunthorpe is the nicest suburb of M/bro, followed by Marton, Coulby Newham and Acklam. Saltburn down the coast is worth considering but avoid Redcar.

Don't live in Middlesborough.

Find somewhere nice outside of 'boro.

I was an idle student there too, and I'd second Guisborough or Yarm (or Northalerton). Definitely avoid Middlesbrough and Redcar .

Cheers, I had no intention of risking the town itself!

There's a 'cottage' (more like shed with windows) for rent in Castleton, how far realisticaly is that as a commute from Wilton? Map says 14 miles, but is that going to be a killer 14 miles on a bike?

Try Stokesley - lovely little market town. 10 miles to Boro, and I'm not sure I'd want to ride the roads every day in mid-winter, but a great location anyway.

Depends where you are on site. Just the ride from the gates to where you're working will dissolve your lungs 😉

Castleton is a bit far out IMO and the road out is always one of the first blocked with snow

Wilton is good for either Guisborough or Yarm

The ride in should be OK most days, the ride home has a bit of elevation to deal with 🙂

Castleton - Wilton's not a commute I'd fancy based on there being some very long steep hills - depends how much you like that sort of thing I suppose. Forgot about Stokesley, definitely worth a look as nickf's said.

+1 for avoiding 'Boro itself.

Stokesly and Guisborough are both nice, you could try Great Ayton too.

Northallerton is nice but there's not really any route to ride to Wilton without using about 12 miles of the A19 😯

Personally I'd avoid Yarm. IME it's full of 2nd Div footballer types and their orange wives 😉

If working in Wilton, then Guisborough or thereabouts is ideal - there is a nice back road ( Wilton Lane ) linking the two.

yeah there is

172/173 or the back roads, shorter that the 19 too but still a bit long for a bike commute IMO

If your working at Wilton and are looking to do a lot of riding I would recommend Guisborough - theres some decent riding at Guisborough woods and surrounding areas (eston hills, north yorkshire moors, carlton, swainby, osmotherly, etc) and its pretty close to Wilton especially if you plan to cycle to work (you could go via Wilton Lane which brings you right out at Wilton International).

If your only going to do the occasional bit of cycling your probably better going for Yarm, Ingleby Barwick (a bit of a traffic nightmare though), Norton, Stockton and travelling a few miles if you want to do some cycling.

Stokesly and Guisborough are probably a little higher rental cost as they're small towns but try Robinsons, whitegates, browns, property angels, for lettings and try to get hold of a copy of the Thursday night evening gazette as that has a housing section with some decent letting section.

Who you going to work for (just out of interest)?

+1 for Guisborough or Saltburn areas. Easy access to Wilton site from either. Skelton is OK too, not as bad as other areas but not amazing either.

Avoid Redcar, Middlesbrough, Carlin How, Loftus and Brotton.
