I recently heard that a girl I used to date at university nearly 30 years ago now sold her company and made a lot of money.  Seems she could do without me after all. Anyone else had a very successful ex, friends etc you used to know.

I managed to destroy all aspirations and hope in my ex's.😉

I'm an energy vampire.

The only interest I have in my ex’s is the knowledge that I’m not with them any more and there’s a damn good reason for that. Mainly me.

As for friends? Everything's relative innit?

Of the friends I went to school with, one is the Mayor of Greater Manchester, but then others are in prison and some are dead from drugs overdoses. I’m quite happy with my mid-table mediocrity thanks

Ex's - no interest.

Former school friends - two profs and a Pet Shop Boy.

People in my year at school are, at the high achieving end, a multiple Olympic gold medal winner and a coupe of multimillionaires, and a double murdering drug mule at the other. Takes all sorts.

They aren’t ex’s

My sisters ex won £20k on Deal or No Deal

  • Consultant Surgeon
  • Very senior civil servant
  • Married money. An awful lot of money.

Yep, they never really got their act together after me. Lots of regrets I'm sure.

I have no clue about the ex's, but I'd did go to school with a premier league footballer and was in scouts with a mercenary.

Not my ex, but a pal's. She's the daughter of the owners of a big online bike store who were trying to sell it for a few years with no success. Then lockdown hit, demand rocketed, they sold it for top dollar. At the same time they were getting divorced. She's now a retired (possibly multi)millionaire.

Went to school with James Knightley. He was headhunted from Uni by INGS bank, you might have seen him on the BBC news in years gone by speaking on economic matters. He used to do impressions of a carrot in the sixth form common room.

One will be a famous glass blower, one day.

One will inherit a spectacularly successful Dutch media organisation.

Not famous, but I introduced two of my ex’s to one another and now they have teamed up to restart the very high brow sexy magazine The Erotic Review. I told them that the only thing they weren’t allowed to review was ex-boyfriends.

One ex stands to inherit a large share of a software outsourcing company, though I can't imagine her dad wanting to relinquish anything until he's carried out of head office in a box.

Other than that, i don't know many rich people! An old mate earns six figures, if that counts? Most of my friends and acquaintances are either teachers and charity workers earning a pittance, or musicians earning even less...

A good friend worked as a bar man, became a regional manager, then a director, then ended up working for a car wash company via a stint at a hotel chain, bought shares to get on the board and is now a millionaire with several houses after his dividend came in. I don’t begrudge him any of it as it’s 100% self made.

I dated a girl for the first 4 years of her course at medical college. It became increasingly clear to me that the only way we were ever going to remain a couple was for me to basically give up all aspirations I might have had and devote my life to following her around wherever her career would take her. I wasn't able to compromise my own life at that stage so broke it off. She went on to be a very successful/respected consultant orthopaedic surgeon and married a lad from New Zealand. She is now more or less retired at 55 and has moved to NZ where, if her Facebook pics are anything to go by, she if living the life of Riley. We're still in touch and good friends but can't help wondering what might of been had I been a bit less strong willed 30 years ago!

My ex wife inherited a decent sized chunk of Lincolnshire. Can being born into the "right" family be called success?

That sounds familiar with a much later ex, an oil exec. Retired at 40.

As I don’t have that many ex’s, I know how the great majority are doing, because we stayed friends and I see several from time to time or else keep in touch. My first gf threw herself at my best mate to get back at me, three kids, a number of grandkids later, they live just across the road from me and I pop over and see them fairly regularly.

None went on to be mega successful, but they’re all doing OK.

Not that many exes TBH, only one I know anything about now is still in education. A bloody good teacher who AFAIK has stayed in the classroom rather than head for senior leadership.

Of my closest school mates, we've all reached vaguely the same level in our chosen careers but none are super high flyers (more to do with our attitudes rather than aptitudes I would say - there's more to life than work). One was a County Archaeologist and is now curator of a museum, one made a fair chunk of cash working in IT during the boom years, and one became a physicist working for the MoD but can't really talk about what he does (knowing his area of specialism I kind of get that).

Oddly (or not given that I teach in the city I grew up in) I now work in a school with my cousin, and two people I was at school with (one of whom is now my deputy).

One was in the paper 3 or 4 years ago on the top of a hill being proposed to. Not sure how successful that makes her?

Tbh I have no idea, haven’t kept in touch with any of my exes.

My ex was mega successful at following her family tradition of alcoholism

That's why she's an ex

All my exes are successful because they got rid of me 😂

Friends and acquaintances include international footballer (but only Wales (!), Coldplay members, bank vice president, former chief of staff of Downing Street, BBC weather presenter (and antivax conspiracy theorist).

My best pal owns a multi national (as in offices in different countries) scientific consultanty business.

Still can't believe how successful he has became.  Well I can cause he is the most intelligent and hard working ****er I know.

I would say lucky b gets to travel all over the world seemingly all the time (but unlike me he has a Mrs).  Must be hard (or easy) leaving her and the two young kids constantly.

One will be a famous glass blower, one day.

I don't think we live in a world where Glass Blowers get famous - well known by other glass blowers maybe, but its such a niche endeavour everyone knows each other anyway :-). (I used to go out with a Glass Artist but she had asthma so did kiln casting)

Seems she could do without me after all.

I remember me and my girlfriend at the time buying a lottery ticket each for the first national lottery draw. Idly speculating about what either of us would do if we won her fantasy millionaire plans started with "Well, the first thing I'd have to do is pay you off"

A couple here won £30million. Before it was known about the daughter asked her ex if he'd get back with her. He apparently wasn't very nice in his reply. Two days later he found out she was now minted.

He must have lied about his age to get in?

Not sure about exes but a school friend went on to be a leading academic in his field and have a couple of TV series, and one of MrsMC's uni friends converted the family dairy farm to holiday cottages and pretty much retired at 35.

I should probably have married her.....

Well I had to Google chihuly, went to his Wikipedia page and recognized exactly nothing about his life, so I suspect "famous" is only within certain circles

Doubtless the best known glassblower if you know any glass makers at all -  but I think 'famous' would be stretching it a bit. I used to hang out in the studios of leading glass artists, have helped make and install some sizeable exhibitions by makers and I don't really know anything about him other than his name.

No famous ex's, but if there was a world championship for Narcissistic people she would win hands down.

Famous friends - went to school with a celebrity chef in Southport. Worked with a firefighter who used to play for Man Utd (before the big wages). He casually mentioned one day when he was sold to Aberdeen, his replacement was George Best. I also work with another ex premier league footballer.

Mega successful probably not. But two of my ex’s are both incredibly wealthy. One is French and works in Investment Banking, she used to work on the trading her floor of a Paris bank, bonuses worth more than I would earn in 10 years.

The other is my ex-wife. All family money for her. She’s an awful human being though, the entire family would rather do what take the last £1 of a homeless person.

One of my ex-girlfriends is on a BBC afternoon TV show. She's doing ok for herself. We still chat regularly and I wish her every success in life. I'm actually prouder of her becoming a mum and raising a fantastic child.

Mostly no idea. Those I do know about have done well in their respective fields, they've been very successful by their own standards. The only one who is/was rich (no news for decades)  followed my advice that she needed to marry a man who could keep her in the style to which she wished to become accustomed.

The best of the lot isn't ex. 🙂

Among friends and aquaintances some have done well financially but the money/success hasn't made them happy. The happiest seem to be those that have enough rather than loads and interests beyond work and money.

"Not that many exes TBH, only one I know anything about now is still in education. A bloody good teacher ."

Given you seem to be the first person on the thread who can actually spell "exes", she seems to have been a very good teacher🤩

Not an ex as but as a teenager I snogged a girl who then went on to be a successful human rights lawyer. She also married George Clooney. I doubt she spends much time thinking about me.

No Ex's that I'm aware of but a school friend who I knew well enough to stay with him in Paris* & go to his stag do sold his company to Equinix for 555m USD in 2007.

Mid-table is aspirational for me. I'm aiming to avoid relegation. I'm sure some ex's have achieved things, but it wouldn't make much difference to me. I'd still lack any interest in anything other than coasting along.

I don’t know why but this line had me in stitches, like something out of an Alan Bennet monologue!
