Did nobody notice a large island?
I know somebody who shipwrecked her yacht on Sardinia, so I'm guessing it's difficult to see. (It's not. I've been there and it's lovely.)

I'm going to take a wild guess and say it wasn't under power at the time, either through fault or it was at anchor. Given the size of it and the battering it was taking you wouldn't know you were adrift until its too late.
As the camera got closer I was wondering if we'd see 2 people fighting with lightsabres on the deck

Imagine the insurance form- “I was sailing along then this island jumped out in front of me from nowhere.”
Small islands have occasionally appeared as if from nowhere, usually due to volcanic activity; but it would help their claim if said island didn't have a name, wasn't on every map and had no population.
