On the verge of buying a 2011 2L soft top with very low miles for £12.5k but I made the mistake of test driving the mk4 and really liked it. It's a bit of a mid life crisis car but I've always wanted one. I'm talking myself into the mk4 because the mk3 came out in 2005, so it's 10 year old technology - am I mad to be thinking of buying a new car? ( note that wife loved driving the mk 4 and she is not a car person )
Had a mk 2. Loved it but tried a mk 3 and it just wasn't the same. Felt bigger and more solid and you didn't seem to be looking at the wheels of lorries towering above you the same when you were stuck in traffic but it was much duller to drive.
The 4 is meant to be closer to the original ethos but haven't tried one. 2 kids means it'll be a while before I am looking at 2 seaters again
Mk3 are a good car, don't rust and reliable. Fun, but not as exciting to drive as Mk1 or 2. I have a Mk3 with the folding hardtop, 07 reg. This Mk4 seems to up the game if reviews are true, I've not had a go yet. Assuming your wife is right, I'd expect the worth of that £12.5k 2011 car to drop by £3k at least over the next six months once the new one hits the streets. It's the end of summer, prices would be falling even if there wasn't a new one.
