[Closed] Mattress Issues with Spinal Injury

Haven't slept well for the last two years since a 'tool' turned right across my path whilst cycling to work. The alloy/carbon fixie got away with a scratch, I however ended up with an unstable spinal fracture - 2 vertebrae broken and 4 ribs. 6 1/2 weeks in hospital and 7 months off work. It's now healed but my L1 is a cheese wedge shape having lost half the front part of it. This in turn leads to pain.

Anyway, couldn't sleep in our bed - it was a deep pocket sprung mattress. Tried an additional topper, that didn't work. About 4 months ago we reluctantly threw away the expensive mattress and got a cheap Ikea memory foam. That was OK with the additional topper, but it's soon started sagging, and my wife hates it.

A few weeks ago we tried out various mattresses and Tempur seemed good. Been putting it off as they are incredibly expensive and it's costly mistake to make. Took the plunge earlier as they had £500 off and interest free credit.

I've been through that many pillows it's been ridiculous. Fingers crossed I'll get some decent sleep from the end of next week !

Fortunately the cost can go on my claim against the third party.

Although you're 'healed', if you're still in pain as a result of this then you're still a 'patient' get advise and support from your GP or any of the services or specialists they can put you in touch with, otherwise you're just throwing money and time (and bad nights sleep) at guesses.

A 'comfy' mattress isn't going to be comfy for you unless something about it is addressing your particular discomfort.

They can't do anything about the pain, I've been discharged. I'm still paying for regular physio to ease the muscles. My spine now has a slight 10 degree tip forward. The consultants have offered 're-building my vertebrae', but they can't guarantee pain relief, and I don't fancy the risk of paralysis, given how close I was to ending up in a wheel chair. The pain is still there as my spine isn't the same shape it was and it's compressing the discs above and below the damaged L1.

I've been advised to go for something like a Tempur from my legal team and I've spoken with people with back issues about mattresses.

To be honest, the missus has been "pushing" for a Tempur, but it's the reason I've held off due to the cost.

I would be surprised if you end up regretting your purchase ..they are excellent ..which will only become really apparent when you sleep on a different mattress sometime in the future ..
Hope it helps to ease your pain.

We've got a caravan, and we ended up changing that mattress to a memory foam, and I do sleep better on them. The one we bought recently is comfy, but it's very quickly developed dips where you sleep, and they are quite noticeable. The caravan one hasn't but it's not used as often.

At least there is a sleep guarantee on these mattresses.

Apparently Tempur is recommended for people with spinal issues. Got it on interest free as well, and a £500 discount can't be sniffed at.

Don't just buy a mattress on the recommendation of someone else, you need to try them out for yourself. Especially something like Tempur which are really expensive.

My wife decided to buy an expensive foam mattress by mail order and over a period of about three months my back got progressively worse. Eventually, getting up in the morning was total agony and I was almost screaming with the pain.

Then I convinced her to try a new bed and we spent several hours trying them out and it turns out I need a soft mattress and she prefers something firmer so we bought a bed with two different constructions which sorted me out.

Everyone is different so what suits you may not suit the wife, so my advice is get along to a decent bedding centre and try out various beds/mattresses and spend quite a bit of time on them and see what suits you both.

We got a Mammoth brand version of the Tempur, and they permit a discount on the grounds of certain ailments/disabilities. It's nice, but a tiny bit too firm for my preference, whereas the shop's model we tried seemed perfect. It had been in the window catching the sun for a year, perhaps it had softened up - ours hasn't in 18months though which is disappointing given the cost. 🙁

OP

If you need a second opinion on your spine I can recommend my surgeon who sorted mine. PM me if you're interested, email in profile.

I went for a Hypnos all natural mattress just before my op, all through my waiting time and recovery the mattress has been superb.

I found that Tempur mattresses really helped me after back surgery. We used the original type NASA one for about 9 years with no sagging (it's now on the spare bed) but we bought a new cloud one last year. It's even better. All other beds are ruined for me now.

Happy Tempur Cloud owner here.
We bought it 4 years ago now, and I can honestly say I have never slept better in my life.
My wife has problems with back pain and a hip impingement, and the mattress has really been a godsend for her.
Worth every penny IMHO 😀

* edit - comment above about only really noticing it when you sleep elsewhere is totally true. Stayed in quite a posh hotel recently, one of the USPs was their posh mattresses. I found them lumpy and bouncy!
