Will be up in Manchester at the weekend for Revolution, staying at the Piccadilly.

Any recommendations for a pub for a cheeky pint or two in the afternoon in the Piccadilly/Portland Street area before we hop in a cab to the velodrome?

Also, where to go for late brekkie (or even brunch dahling) on Sunday morning?

Best pub in that area is the Lass O Gowrie by the BBC.

Even if you don't leave the northern quarter you can't go too wrong. I'd head and stay there- Lass O Gowrie is inbetween Picadilly and the Northern Quarter so a mini pub crawl 😀

If you're on Portland Street, then the Circus Tavern is good. Its very cosy. Or you're next to the northern quarter. Plenty of good bars. But you have to look like a member of Mumford and Sons to be allowed in

Was there word of meeting up for a pint? What time you out brov?

The Lass is ok, but not all that. If you're getting a taxi anyway then it doesn't really matter where you are within the city centre, I suppose, so I'll recommend the City Arms on Kennedy steet. Others include unbiquitous suggestions such as The Britons Protection (excellent seclection of Whiskys) and the Peveril Of The Peak)

er - no it isn't? Lass O Gowrie is the other way, between Piccadilly and Oxford Road

The Marble? Quality pub. And you'll be the right side of town for getting to the velodrome

Lass O'Gowrie's the wrong way really though, we're only going to have an hour or so and it'll take 10-15mins to get there from the Piccadilly.

Anywhere a bit nearer?

And, my geography of Manchester is not what it was, but how is the Lass between Piccadilly and the Northern Quarter?

For breakfast I would recommend either Antonio's on the approach to Picadilly station for a dirty, greasy fry-up; or RetroBar on the former UMIST campus for a less dirty but equally greasy fry-up. The latter comes with unlimited tea or coffee.

Careful if the locals take you out. And bring some change to give hora to make up his round. 🙂

Not the Marble- its the other way, before the rough/open carpark across the road from Roche Borbois/ancoats. Argh, this is going to bug me until I use street google...

Ooh, Kennedy Street, my Dad used to work there, could take a historical trip.

Where's The Marble? Is it, how shall I put it, 'authentic'. I like 'authentic' pubs 🙂

Binners - we'll be at the hotel for about half four, then out for a sneaky pint and jumping in a cab to the Velodrome at six. I thought I'd sent you a mail but it would appear that I only sent it to Souter, eejit that I am. You about?

+1 for the Marble.

Proper pub and proper beer. Friendly barstaff too, a rarity in Manchester 😉

If you've only got an hour, the City Arms might be a bit far, but it is authentic.

Yeah, try not to be to disheartened by the walk to the pub...don't worry, you'll be heading the right way, it just won't look like it as you wander across a scene from a post apocalyptic movie 🙂

I tried to explain to the bar staff why I was laughing so much when i order a pint of this in the Marble, but it's quite hard to describe unless you're actually from Glasgow 🙂

Merchant-Banker - my office was a street away. If we were going out for lunch, it was a no-brainer. They do the chunkiest chips in the world!

I think the City Arms is the winner for location, especially as we're staying at that glorious Mancunian landmark that is the Piccadilly Hotel.

NBT, a pint is yours if you happen to be around 🙂

So, we'll be in there from about half four, if anyone else fancies joining us, feel free 🙂

I only went to Manchester once, to see Black Grape at the Apollo. That was quite a night, and quite a lairy crowd of mentalists.

Katsoris Deli on the corner of Deansgate and John Dalton Street is a fantastic place, and there breakfasts are spotty dog IMHO..

The Retro bar is fairly dirty/greasy in IME. Last time we went in there for breakfast a 6' transvestite and his friend sat right next to us despite there being many other vacant tables in there. This is not connected to the dirty/greasy comment but was none the less a little unsettling

Retro bar is bloody awful, I don't know what the fuss is about. Yes, it's retro - it's your typical mid 80s estate boozer. Awful decor and awful drinks, the only bitter on tap was john smiths or something

Oh, and the best pub by Piccadilly is the Bull's Head. In fact, it's the only decent boozer by the train station. Go down the escalators to the tram, straight out the sneaky door to the left, over the road and you're there. I reckon if your train was leaving on the hour you could be finishing your pint at 5 to. Decent ales too, if a bit pricey.

Oh, and forgot about the Port Street Beer House, near Piccadilly station towards Ancoats, less than 5 mins from the station. The best selection of beers in Manchester by a mile, a bit poncey, a bit pricey, but better than the other Northern Quarter bars/pubs. Worth a look fo sho, bro.

Is that on the corner adjacent to the working girls? I thought it was a mental pub??

Anyone fancy an urban exploration of the old station? 8)

Koffee pot - Northen Quarter for greasy breakfast?

Nursed many a hangover etc in there after being out all night. You might even meet a muso or two, indeed some have even signed the walls- its that kind of place!

Maybe not a sexy option but Wetherspoons always ticked my box when I stay in Brighton.

Nah hora, I think the pub you mean is the Star and Gather, it's more of a club these days though. The Morrissey Smiths disco is good, if you like hanging around with fey indie boys and girls. And if you dont pull there, then the working girls may oblige outside.

You lot are getting old. If I stay in a hotel, its sweet sweet loving and the first thing I eat is lunch.

It went well, The City Arms was indeed a perfect pre-Revolution pub. And, for that matter, post-Revolution too. We even got some free sandwiches and chicken drumsticks from the birthday do that was on next door 🙂

Hora did show, I bought him a drink. It's fine though, I'm sure he'll buy me one back...

Kro for breakfast was less successful (sorry Coot). They seem to (eventually) serve their (cold) veggie cooked breakfasts with, well, bacon...

Christ! I've just read Hora's last post. I've just been a little bit sick

Amazingly, Hora did turn up. But, of course he didn't buy anyone drinks. He never does. Ever. Though on this occasion as it was a quick couple, and not a rounds situation, we'll let him off. Well... when I say he was there. He was there in body. He sat there and fiddled constantly with his phone like a 14 year old schoolgirl, then showed us what he's just bought from Urban Outfitters in the Arndale. All that was missing was for him to contract chlamydia!

Great to see IHN and Mrs IHN though

Did he sort out his 'troubles' in the end? Will it be an interestting morning at work for him this morning?

Oh, and for clarity, it's not strictly MrsIHN, it's IHN'ssoontobecohabitee.

Revolution was good too, will deffo be back again.
