So, I have watched series 1 and 2 and really enjoyed them, however, I still don't get it!! Can someone explain in simple terms what is going on? Characters in 2 different timelines, the films that everyone wanted etc. Parallel universe? How do they cross to the 'other' world?
Loved it but still confused.
Me too. Didn't really get it but watched all episodes in about 2 weeks!
the characters are all in the same timeline (other than what is seen in the films), however they're in 2 alternate universes. There is perhaps some sort of ability to travel into an alternate universe in the future (to bring back the newsreel footage). The way to cross appears to be meditation
I thought there was time travel. I'm assured i'm a lunatic.
Happens to me all the time, using alcohol rather than meditation.
Woke up last week in a world where traffic cones are considered headwear and underpants are worn backwards.
It's never really been explained but I made the same assumptions as 5lab. Alternative universes.
This is just a wild guess but If they ever have to rationalise it I expect the cause will be the nuclear detonations which occurred in either universe Hiroshima/Nagasaki in universe A and Washington in universe B.
I watched them then read the book hoping for something but the tv only followed it loosely and way more stuff goes on in the tv series.
I had to google the ending as I was still confused. It's suggested that the characters are fictional characters in an alternate fictional world such as a book, with some characters becoming aware of it. But the struggle of the characters could still be the same in either reality.
Am glad I am not the only one then, was expecting someone to come along and say 'its .....' and I would feel stupid lol

That's pretty much what I thought, but I couldn't decide if <SPOILER!> the sister thing at the end </SPOILER> messes it up. Also it doesn't really explain where the films come from.
The sister thing may be the same sort of thing as the Trade Minister's assistant crossing over and finding his family, or the Trade Minister crossing over and seeing both his son and his wife.
Maybe the alternate sister was the one that got killed in series 1 and the one at the end of series 2 was the 'real' one?
I was enjoying it when it was just an "alternate reality" thing.
I lost interest a bit when it became clear it was more sci-fi than "what if".
