Due to a random distraction half time football purchase the other night, the remastered version of this....
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JOKn33-q4Ao
....arrived today.
Jesus wept, I'd forgotten how powerful the title track is.
If you're in a good place tonight, give it a go.
Which, naturally led to this.....

....this...
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=C5QelV1S0TY
....and inevitably this....
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6SFNW5F8K9Y
....which I reckon is probably the finest piece of guitar playing I've ever heard.
Yours?
The freakier the better.
Obviously.
Guthrie Govern playing Erotic Cakes, a virtuoso guitar performance.
Has that guitar of Prince's come back to earth yet?
Is two guitars allowed?
Hendrix - Catfish Blues. I've got a recording that isn't on YouTube but might be on Spotify.
Hmm, never been keen on Dweezil's playing (or Stevie Vai's "impossible guitar parts"). I much prefer Frank.
Anyone remember a Sunday lunchtime politics TV programme called "Weekend World"? The intro was a segment from Nantucket Sleighride. Imagine my disappointment when I bought the album and discovered that was the only worthwhile part.
Marc Bolan! Marc Bolan? you cry!
After a minute you’ll understand
A bit newer and a bit freakier
Maggot Brain is sublime and chilled, always loved it from first listen.
A couple of guitar freakouts that stand out for me.
1. Zappa/Mothers of Invention - ‘Dupree’s Paradise’ Stockholm. Aug 21 1973.
Ye gods it’s beautiful.
(Drop into it @ 7min40 secs, turn the lights down and volume up)
2. Magma - ‘Nebehr Gudhatt’ Théâtre du Trianon, Paris, (30th Magma Anniversary celebration - May 13 & 14, 2000)
Galactic-level freakage from the late James McGaw (sadly passed away on March 9th this year)
3. Led Zeppelin ‘Dazed and Confused’ - Madison Square Garden NYC 1973
Jimmy Page has a shreddybrek glow about him. JPJ + Bonham indescribable here too. Take from 4mins in:
4. Magma ‘KMX B12’. Triton, Paris, 2005
Philippe Bussonet’s brute-iful bass freakout:
??
Now that's what I'm talking about....🙂
Thanks folks.....

I'm torn, tbh.....
Love the Dweez's first couple of albums, but they're hard work if you're fresh to them.
Frank, I adore.....
Possibly his most accessable track, but as he so succinctly put it, who gives a **** anyway?

And something subtle.....but freaky nonetheless.....

Thee Oh Sees ‘The Dream’ @ Pitchfork 2012
There are a few equally epic versions of this knocking about but this captures Dwyer at his freaktastiest IMO!
OP, last of my picks (but probably owing the most to Maggotbrain) and not least:
Boris ‘Feedbacker’. LA Echoplex 29/09/2019
Wata’s style reminds me of Hendrix in that sustained, weeping, air-crushing sense. Enjoy! 💔
I suspect the reason I couldn't find Peter Green named previously is that no one could choose a favourite from so many.
here you go:
you don't have to be a great guitarist to freak out
Mike Deasy on Cannonball Adderley's Aquarius. Really kicks in after 1.30.
+1 ‘Safesurfer
you don’t have to be a great guitarist to freak out
Agreed, but IMO Donald is a fine (and humble) guitar-player with moments of inspired greatness up there with some of the best, and he shines there. I prefer Safesurfer to Maggot Brain tbh, and was by Cope’s own unapologetic account his 21st century tribute to the track. Stolen well in the open.
Similarly, ‘Upwards At 45 Degrees’ guitar freakout outro from ‘Jehovakill’ is a soaring firework of a thing:
Begins around 3 mins in:
Talking back to Maggot Brain, what goes around comes around. And around…

Distinct lack of (arguably the unchained king of guitar-freakouts) Kawabata Makoto?
I suspect the reason I couldn’t find Peter Green named previously is that no one could choose a favourite from so many.
Good point, though I'm not sure I would refer to his sublime playing as a "freak out".
Timely this
Maggot brain, the album, is 50 years old, today, tomorrow, in a bit
For some reason thought of Ted Nugent in the Amboy Dukes 'baby please don't go'
Does this count?

and this?
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=yeZHB3ozglQ
And another..
...surprised no one's posted a version of this yet? Full freakout!
Another plus 1 for Donald Ross Skinner.
Ill leave this...
sorted
Les Rallizes Dénudés - Night Of The Assassins
^^That shimmering, sussed-stain of sonic starlight from Bill Nelson was exactly what I needed painted into my brain today. Never heard it before. Cheers.

😁'tis good isn't it
Just remembered Ed Wynne’s firmament-bending 2 min outro freakout on ‘Sunhair’
(from 3 min 50ish)
And Stooges ‘Dirt’. (3 min 20). Probably the most sexytime guitar freakout ever
More Kawabata Makoto (pre-AMT/Melting Paraiso)
Nishinihon - ‘Superstation’
The lead is multitracked 😵💫😵💫
@ 2mins
