...so now I'm exploring my options. I quite fancy doing some contract work and as such would like to get some advice on setting up a limited company. Early days at the moment but if anyone can point me in some useful directions it would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
In what type of work?
Good luck, i was made redundant in July and i'm going bonkers here!
Trying to get in with the council cos they're promising to let me do a level 1 cycle instructors course, but the buggers just keep telling me they'll be in touch but never are.
I'm IT, realsitic choice of umbrella (Parasol) used to be good. Fixed monthly fee. Limited control (can get REAL expenses and do pension) over money.
Ltd Co, use accountant (say 800ish per year for doing all books etc etc).
More conrol over money, slightly more hassle. You get pretty good stuff from HMRC. (Eithet buy off shelf or register own name - off shelf is a fait bit cheaper - own name is about £200 ???) possibly))
The most powerful person in the world is the VAT man, don't take the piss.
(They have right of entry etc etc)
I'm in IT.
I got made redundant at the end of june, I'm still looking but hopeful of something next month?
keep looking, writing to companies directly can work, freelance is good money but not particularly reliable
unless you can land big fish type contract. Best of luck and get out on your bike as you may never have this much free time again.
Have a chat with WCA, he joined the STW jobless club for a while earlier this year but still managed to organize a cracking charity bike event.
try a search there are a few threads around on the contractor thing.
i use beancounters
let me know if you are interested and i wouldnt mind refering you 😉
Just seen your other email. Really sorry to hear that mate, it's seriously shitty what they've done to you there.
I've run a limited company for when times were good and used an umbrella company for when they weren't, it worked out more economical in those instances. Go look at contractoruk which is a very useful website for someone in your position.
Just ask if you need a reference.
It might be worth bearing in mind, when I was made redundant, in between the contracts, I just cycled, constantly. Came 18th in MM solo as a result so it wasn't all bad.
Hard Luck mate I was in the same boat as you early this year I now work as a truck driver but you have take what you can get.
I hope any severance you were due comes through I am still chasing mine I should have walked away with 35 grand in all. I am still 30 grand short just hope the solicitors can make some headway soon.
