Help - my ever reliable old white plastic MacBook boots up but then goes into a frozen sate where the multi coloured wheel of death spins for ever... Tried resetting by taking the battery out but not sure what else to do - any simple things to try and do I have to find an official Mac fixer nearl Ilkley ?

Thanks all Mac addicts

Have you tried leaving it running overnight? It could be installing updates or indexing for search.

Possibly a knackered hard drive. Easy enough to fit a new one & restore from Time Machine backup.

If you're lucky it's a disk or directory issue, see what discs/resources you have to hand and Google how to boot from then and diagnose/repair the disk.

If you're unlucky its the relatively common issue with failing motherboard solder joints, in which case Google fixing that in the oven (probably not worth the health risks or anguish) and the cost of a replacement.

In either case, if it boots and you have access to the fike system, at the FIRST opertunity - copy any unique files to one or two backup discs/drives.

Good luck.

Like a MacBook Air...
Good luck anyway, it does seem like it might be the HDD going tits-up, in which case it's mending with a new one and restoring from Time Machine.
You do have it backed up, don't you?
