looking on the crucial website and mentions matched and non matched pairs, what difference does it make?

Currently my mac has 2gig of memory and wondering what difference i would notice if i upped it to 4gig, 8 would be nice but a tad pricey. Or even what would happen if i bought a single 4gig module and made it 5gig? I am assuming the memory is 2 1gig modules.

The reason is fiddling with photos in Aperture.

If the two sticks of memory are exactly the same then the computer can write to the pair of them much more quickly than if they are different; the memory is kinda zebra striped across them.
