Looking at a new Macbook Air 11in for working-on-the-train and wondering what extras are worth getting for it? eg. which protective case, extended warranty (have seen AppleCare on Ebay at £149 instead of AppleStore £199) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AppleCare-Protection-Plan-for-MacBook-Macbook-Air-Pro-13-11-inch-Retina-Display-/111412053546.

Any help much appreciated.

Get a stoodent to go in with you, AppleCare drops to about £50. You'll need a soft case for it to live in too, the aluminium scratches with the lightest touch.

I've not got many gadgets for mine. The Magic Mouse was worth the money, those plastic covers can be a bit hit and miss with respect to fit, so choose carefully if you're going to get one (I don't use one). VMware Fusion is good if you need to run a Windows VM, I chose this in preference to Parallels. The best bag I came across was the Incase Sling Sleeve, I got mine at 50% off. I've also got a Cool Bananas Shock case, less bulky than the Incase and good for when the laptop is in a rucksack.

OP there was a MacBook thread very similar to this recently. If it were me I'd skip the Apple Care and buy a 13 machine, get 8GM RAM if you can (4 is ok but not great). My daughter got Apple care as she is a student, I think at full price it's too expensive - perhaps I've been lucky but never had a piece of Apple kit go wrong (phones/pad/macbooks/mac mini ..)

As I posted on the other thread just get a case, nothing else is really needed. I like the neoprene style ones.

Crumpler do a nice sleeve-type case, without zips to damage the finish.

Il bought an MBA back in May and it's bloody excellent, don't ask the spec cos' I can't remember 😆
Anyway I opted for Apple Care, a remote mouse, MS Office suite and I carry it in this... I think Rapha designed all their carry kit so Apples products fit nicely in them 8)

This is the padded Musette, I've got the pink strip one (but then you kinda guessed I would didn't you)

Tell me which city you live in and I'll get you the web address for the student shop of your nearest university. Apparently only available when you are on campus but they are easy enough to figure. Apple never check, me and all my friends always buy apple kit using the higher education discount.

If you buy from the higher education store then 3yr applecare is included as standard as well, although you can pay about an extra £50 for one-to-one phone help if you want.

Max out the ram, big a hard drive as you need, nice slip case for protection if its going in your bag just to stop scratches.... I like these: http://stash.bigcartel.com/category/ipad-macbook-air-sleeves
