We are on a shared network with macs and PCs all connected. It is set up so any user can log on to any machine and use it. However, on one Mac, at the log-in screen all I can see is 'Administrator' or '(My Account)'. On all other machines there is also an option to log on as another user (ie, three options on the login screen) but on this one only the two.

I have tried looking in System Preferences but there is nothing there (that I Can see) to allow me to set the log-in screen to show the function to log in as another user.

Anyone have any ideas?

How?

Aha - that bit I don't know (it was set up by our long since gone IT person). It is a Windows Server I believe.

Basically, a colleague should be able to log on to my machine but the option isn't there for them to do it, but they can do it on another identical machine sat next to mine that is connected to the same network in the same (I assume) way.

I can log on with Admin privileges but still can't see any kind of option to change the setting...

Is there any network authentication, or is each PC/Mac configured with the same username/password (so to fool the network - old trick...)

I *think* there is network authentication but I don't quite understand what you are asking in the second half of your comment!

Hmm Xiphon - that seems way beyond what I could do but the issue is that the Mac CAN log on to the network (as me or the admin) but the 'Other' option is simply not there on the log-in screen.

From what I have (skim) read of that link, I am not sure it would solve my particular issue. Thanks though - I will show it to my more tech savvy business partner when he is in on Monday.

The trick of keeping the same usernames/passwords on all PCs, meant when PC1 connected to PC2, it said "Hi, my names User1, with a password of XYZ123 - can I connect to you please?" To which PC2 replied "Ah yes, I have a person called User1 with password XYZ123 on my computer - must be the same person!" (When in fact it's not...)

( Used that trick to join several Windows SBS networks together for a client )

Sounds like your Server (perhaps Small Business Server 2003??) is providing the authentication services (Active Directory). Very common small business setup.

Simply put - when you login to any computer, it asks the Server if the login is valid.

Okay I sort of understand that - so your link should solve the problem - I just don't understand why this one machine doesn't even have the option to log on as another user, but it DOES remember me as a user.

I really am puzzled why there isn't an option to log on as another user on the login screen!
