one is a 6 lots of 8 bit numbers, the other is 4 lots of 8 bit numbers - how come we always quote one in hex and the other in decimal?
(just setting up a log for both on a DHCP server, and the disparity seems strange)

Because we rarely have to remember MAC addresses; converting IPs to 4 x 8bit numbers makes them easy to recall and quote.

MAC is lower level and lower level stuff sounds cooler in hex.
